18 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2019 LEADERSHIP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A FUTURE CAREER Job fairs aren't always exciting. But for Nicholas Derienzis, mid-Atlantic recruiting coordinator, manning a booth at the April multicultural job fair in Silver Springs, Maryland, led to multiple connections with Spanish-speaking individuals and the recruitment of a new trimmer for the Gaithersburg R/C office. "A lot of people see us out in the community but don't know what we do, so we describe Davey Tree and the different opportunities we have," Derienzis said. "The challenge of a job fair is turning those encounters into actual employees." Tony Faoro and Elcy Arias from the Gaithersburg R/C office discuss Davey opportunities with job seekers. DAVEY REPRESENTS AT KENT EXPO The annual Kent Business, Healthcare and Community Expo aims to bring the community, schools and local businesses together. For Eric Phillips, Brohn Amstutz and Mike Hale, of Davey's Akron R/C office, manning an information booth at the expo allowed for face-to-face time with over 1,200 people Davey serves each day. "Davey is a part of Kent. We wanted to show our continued support for the community. This event is great for us and for people to see what we do," said Scott Heim, district manager, Akron office. Akron R/C sales representatives Brohm Amstutz, Mike Hale and Eric Philips at the expo booth. LEADING BY EXAMPLE FROM THE GROUND For skills trainer Eduardo Medina, the 4th Annual Mexican Tree Climbing Championship in Oaxaca, Mexico, was about competition, education and safety. "For me, there is nothing else more amazing than climbing," said Medina, who served as instructor, technician and judge at the event. "As with Davey, in Mexico there is a focus on being safe when you climb." More than 30 competitors, including five women, took part in the event from March 7-9. Davey served as a sponsor of the event. Eduardo Medina said Davey's sponsorship of the competition exemplifies a culture of safety, professionalism and teaching.
