21 November/December 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Catherine Kilbane, a member of Davey's board of directors, was awarded the 2018 Heath Oliver Distinguished Director Award by the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) Foundation Board of Directors. This award was established in memory of longtime Foundation Board of Director Heath Oliver. Congratulations, Cathy! A.D. Ali,, manager of technical services, Davey Institute, received the award for Excellence in Education from the Florida Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. "This award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the education of the Florida Chapter members or to the sum knowledge of arboriculture," according to the Florida ISA website. Congratulations, A.D.! Matthew Shepherd, ecosystems specialist, Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company, received a Champion Award from the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services for his efforts to evacuate a residential building after one unit caught fire. Shepherd noticed the smoke and started knocking on doors to alert residents of neighboring units. Congrats, Matthew! Emily Beacham design engineer, Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company, was named the Co-op Supervisor of the Year by the Cornell University College of Engineering. Beacham served as a mentor in the college's cooperative education program for 2017-2018. Students in the program nominate a mentor or supervisor who has helped them grow in a professional capacity during their co-op position. The award is bestowed upon one mentor or supervisor each year. Congratulations, Emily! David Dechant, senior consulting arborist, Arborguard Tree Specialists, was selected to participate in the city of Atlanta's Urban Ecology Framework Technical Advisory Committee. The committee is examining Atlanta's natural areas, including rivers and creeks, forests and tree canopy, ridges and watersheds, public and private green spaces and other defining features of the city. Congrats, David! IN THE SPOTLIGHT Sean Sornberger account manager, Davey Tree Surgery Company, assisted PG&E's Matt McLane, vegetation program manager, with a third-party tree removal. McLane witnessed a non-Davey tree trimming crew cutting and dropping limbs near energized lines. McLane noticed that they weren't working safely and needed to discontinue working. McLane reached out to Sornberger and asked him to send a Davey crew immediately to keep the unqualified crew from attempting to continue the work. This story made the front page of the PG&E Electrical Avenue Publication, the utility's internal employee communication. Great work, Sean!
