20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2018 CHURCH REJOICES FOR JOB WELL DONE When a heavy windstorm blew through the Hudson River town of Tarrytown, New York, it brought a tree or two down with it. Patrick Laidman, district manager of The Care of Trees (TCOT), a Davey company, Elmsford office, was called out to the First Baptist Church of Tarrytown to assess some tree damage following the storm. "A tree had failed below ground in its root system and the wind uprooted it, leaving it leaning against the rectory building and causing some roof damage," Laidman said. A crew visited the site the next day to start dismantling the tree and reduce its weight to ensure there would be no further damage to the building. They finished removing the tree from the building utilizing a crane. The historic church, celebrating 175 years of ministry this year, was very pleased with the work done by the TCOT Elmsford office. "We are very thankful that you were able to come out so quickly. And your crew was terrific!" said Sue Robinson of the First Baptist Church in a note to Laidman. "They were hard working and efficient." Read about Davey's historic connection to the city of Tarrytown, New York, in this issue's "From the Archives" on page 30. OWL SAVED BY BARRINGTON TEAM John Kelly, sales arborist, and Ernesto Patino-Rolanos, foreman, from The Care of Trees, a Davey company, Barrington office, helped save a great horned owl chick that lodged its wing in a white pine tree at Cuba Marsh in Deer Park, Illinois. A walker at the marsh found the baby owl and notified the forest ranger, who then contacted Dawn Keller, owner of Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation, a non-profit wildlife organization. Kelly and Keller have worked together in the past, so she gave him a call to see if he could help. "It was an awful sight to see," Kelly said. "It's amazing the poor thing survived." Kelly called Patino-Rolanos, who was Ernesto Patino-Rolanos and Dawn Keller took a photo with Rafa the owl. Rafa is named after John Kelly's favorite tennis player and hero Rafael Nadal. 10 minutes away on a job site, and asked him to bring the bucket truck to help get the chick out of the tree. "The poor thing was exhausted," Kelly said. "She (Keller) knew he was alive, but she was worried about how much tissue damage had been done to the wing." Patino-Rolanos went up in the bucket and cut the branch where the chick was attached, Kelly said. The chick was brought safely to the ground. "He did all of the hard work and I was proud that he did that," Kelly said. "Ernesto deserves all of the credit." The good news is, Kelly heard that the owl was accepted by foster parents and he was able to keep his wing. VISION MISSION Keller named him Rafa after Kelly's favorite tennis player and hero Rafael Nadal. "They are such amazing creatures," Kelly said. "Ernesto and I were proud to be part of its rescue." A windstorm knocked this tree onto the First Baptist Church of Tarrytown's rectory building when its root system failed.
