9 November/December 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN MANAGERS REINFORCE SAFETY CULTURE Davey employees in various leadership roles met in Huron, Ohio, to participate in one of four regional Davey Managers 20-Hour Safety Leadership Programs. This 20-hour interactive program reviews and reinforces the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to implement Davey's safety policies and procedures and establish a culture of safety in our operations. The program has been developed as a course for credit as part of the associate's degree in environment management partnership Davey has with Kent State University. Topics included Davey's Road to Zero, young worker safety, Davey Personal Excellence, hazard recognition and control tools, OSHA regulations, OSHA inspection procedures, motor carrier safety, incident analysis, investigation, and reporting, other safety policies and procedures, and client safety expectations. Attendees included: Shane Adams, Christine Balk, Mike Bondarenka, Matt Bootier, Morgan Browning, Tim Bushnell, Bradan Claughton, Darren Corbelli, Mike Dawes, John Drescher, Chris Feliciano, Scott Ford, Nick Forton, David Hartung, Kelly Kiel, Scott Larson, Andrew Lewis, Allison Martin, Robert McGuire, James McRann, Wesley Moorhead, Joshua Piquette, Kevn Ptacek, Clark Ristaino, Taylor Rogers, Jacob Ryg, Daniel Schwartz, Mark Solada, Robert Spartz, Ryan Statham, Michael Stevens, Ryan Wilkinson and Brad Wise. Facilitators were Rochelle Cooper, Joe Engberg, Elizabeth Heritage, Mike Horneber, Paul Milano, Roy Montan, Jon Schmidt, Joe Tommasi, Mike Veney, Johnny Wilson and Regie Wilson. "It's an opportunity to learn about, or in some cases brush-up on, Davey safety policies and procedures. It's also a chance to meet people from different service lines and learn what they are doing," said Joe Engberg, manager, safety program support. "Meeting Davey people from other service lines and operations is a 'hidden' benefit to this type of program because it spans the company." SAFETY RISING BEFORE DAWN TO MEET THE CLIENT'S NEEDS Davey's Justin Simmonds, trimmer, Cincinnati R/C office, and Rich Simmonds, foreman, North Cincinnati R/C office, started working on a hazard tree removal in a Cincinnati park during the wee hours of the morning to avoid a streetcar's operational hours. The tree originated in the park but extended over the street and overhung the streetcar wires, said Bob Meoak, district manager, Cincinnati R/C office. Two of the limbs extended within the 10 feet safety window of the wires. "We are not allowed to work within 10 feet of the streetcar wires when the streetcar is operating," Meoak said. Justin Simmonds (left) and Rich Simmonds started working at 4 a.m. on a hazard tree removal for the city of Cincinnati while the streetcar was inactive. RESOLVE The streetcar wires are a DC current, but they're off between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m., Meoak said. The city directed them to perform the work when the streetcar wasn't active, so Justin and Rich volunteered to come in at 4 a.m. to remove the two limbs. "I met them down there to be sure we got the right limbs and there were no problems, but Justin and Rich had it well under control," Meoak said.
