FIELD NOTES
HELPING OTHERS CLIMB HIGH
Did you know the most important Christopher Columbus
collection on the North American continent is smack dab
in the middle of Pennsylvania?
Todd Sherbondy of Davey's East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
R/C office didn't until he volunteered there for the
Penn-Del Chapter of International Society of Arboriculture's
Arbor Day of Service at Boal Mansion earlier this year.
"It was a pretty phenomenal place with unbelievable relics
and such a rich history," Sherbondy noted. "That's what
happens when you just say yes and seize the opportunity!"
Sherbondy, along with a fellow crew member, spent the
better part of a spring day cleaning up the site in preparation
for the chapter's annual climbing competition. They pruned
the trees on the site, namely thinning the crowns and
removing hazardous deadwood on the butternut and
mulberry trees.
"I've always felt obligated to give back. I've been able to
do what I love to do, and I don't think there's a more valuable
application in the industry than giving back to people and
building the next generation of arborists," Sherbondy said.

Mansion and pruned the trees to prep for the upcoming climbing

DAVEY SURGERY HOLDS FIRE SAFETY MEETING
Every year at the start of fire season,
all field level managers and senior
managers from the Davey Tree
Surgery Company meet in California
to discuss the Davey Fire Plan and
fire prevention.
Before the meeting, the fire plan is
reviewed and goals for improvement
are determined, said Bill Heriford,
operations manager, the Davey Tree
Surgery Company.
"This year, all field-level managers
were requested to go through the
Factors and Forces courses online
prior to fire season," Heriford said.
The Forces and Factors course was
developed by the Davey Institute and
the corporate safety department.
This course teaches participants
a straightforward, efficient way to
determine the risks related to climbing
or working in, on or near a tree.
During the meeting, attendees heard a presentation from CAL FIRE about the 2018 fire season
and what to anticipate this year. There also were presentations about Factors and Forces.
