29-YEAR CAREER WITH DAVEY, 43 YEARS'
WORTH OF EXPERIENCES WITH PG&E
1. It's a great life. "If you like trimming
trees, it's a great way to get to
know the area. I could tell you
where every powerline is from
Golden Gate Bridge up to Humboldt.
I dream at night about the different
things that happened during my
career and the places I've been. And
without Davey Tree, I wouldn't have
gone to one-third of the places."
2. Buy stock. "I started buying stock
as soon as I could, and I've bought
stock ever since. I think the biggest
benefit a person can get out of
Davey Tree is to buy stock as soon
as you can. I haven't sold one share.
That's retirement right there, you
don't have to worry about social
security or anything else."
3. Always an opportunity for
personal growth. "Being on the
President's Council was a lot of
fun and interesting. Doug (Cowan)
would talk about what the board
was doing, and it really enlightened
you on the whole picture of Davey
Tree. You have the opportunity to go
anywhere you want to. That is the
thing about Davey Tree. You are not
just limited to what you're doing.

RETIREE CORNER
For 43 years, David Fruth worked with the PG&E
account for the North Bay area of California, from
north of San Francisco to Humboldt County, until
his retirement in 2012.
His tree care industry career began in 1969, while
working for Sohner Tree, which held the utility
contract for the North Bay area. In 1983, the
Davey Tree Surgery Company won the contract
for the PG&E North Bay account, and that's when
Fruth's journey with Davey began.
Davey hired Fruth on as a district foreman at the
beginning of 1983. Two years later, he was
promoted to supervisor. In 1990, he was promoted
again to area manager. By the end of his career,
he oversaw 86 employees and five district foremen.
During his career at Davey, Fruth was a member of
the Davey President's Council from 1996 to 1998.
He ran the PG&E pole test and treat program and
became an International Society of Arboriculture
Certified Arborist
®
. He also has a Qualified Applicator
License from the Department of Pesticide
Regulation that was useful for the PG&E pole test
and treat program and their Slow Grow program.
FRUTH'S LESSONS FOR WORKING AT DAVEY TREE
Since retiring, David Fruth
has been working on projects
around the house. But, a couple
times a month you will find him
at a trapshooting competition.
Fruth is a registered trap shooter
with the Pacific International
Trapshooting Association and
the Amateur Trapshooting
Association. He has over 250,000
registered targets and has
been participating in the sport
since 1979.
