3 November/December 2017 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN " At Davey, safety isn't a department. It's a culture. Yes, we have an entire safety department, but it doesn't stop there. Every manager is a safety manager. Every coworker checks for safety and PPE before they start working. We have next-level safety. When I walk in, I'm happy to see the people I work with, and they're happy to see me. That connection feeds back into the safety culture. You want them to stay safe. " MIKE DEGIORGIO branch manager Commercial Landscape Services Baltimore, Maryland ENDURING WILD WEATHER Matt Fredmonsky One word can sum up much of this issue of The Bulletin's coverage: storms. Tornadoes carved paths of destruction across Texas, leaving broken trees in their wake, calling on Residential/ Commercial and the Davey Tree Surgery Company utility services to respond. Wind storms battered Tennessee, pushing over trees all over Memphis, including on the historic estate of Elvis Presley, and prompting responses from the Jones Bros. Tree & Land- scape, a Davey company, office and Eastern Utility services crews. The Arborguard Tree Specialists Atlanta office even got involved by sending crews to help Jones Bros. And that was just before June! Hurricane season brought with it the historic arrivals of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Harvey, which topped out as a Category 4 hurricane, sent relentless rainfall that inundated Houston with unprecedented flooding, which put Davey Surgery crews on the front lines of the response along with the Houston and San Antonio R/C offices and Davey Resource Group employees. Irma hammered Florida soon after, calling on many of the same Davey crews who responded to Harvey to get back on the road – about 1,000 Davey employees responded to Irma from all our service lines, including Utility, DRG, R/C and Commercial Landscape Services. This fall, in particular, severe storms tested the resolve of hundreds of our fellow employees, many of whom worked long days for weeks on end responding to storm calls. Their endurance is a testament to their ability to serve as leaders in their communities in times of hardship. Their dedication to helping their communities, despite their own personal hardships, sets an example we can all follow. Clients took notice. You'll find numerous letters in this issue thanking Davey employees for their storm recovery efforts. Elsewhere, those affected by the storm showered Davey crews with notes of thanks on social media from Facebook to Twitter, Instagram and Yelp. One client called on Davey after Hurricane Irma sent a huge oak limb crashing through his roof. "The crew that came out was great," Lou A. wrote in a Yelp review. "They managed to get the crane and bucket truck into tight quarters, safely performed the job and did a great job cleaning our yard." How we respond to storms is a true example of the best of Davey. Such responses are a reflection of your commitment to the company's core values of integrity, safety, improvement, expertise, leadership and resolve. Thank you all for your service this fall!
