30 | January/February 2014 An Everlasting Love for Trees Davey Memories T hanks to trees, we better understand Mother Nature and the earth's many benefits. But trees also offer memories of the past, meaning to the present and hope for the future. They mingle with several aspects of our lives, mimicking the intertwining patterns of their branches. For decades, Davey has recognized the value of trees to their owners, families, caregivers and visitors; a sentiment the company has used to market its services over the years. From "Precious are the memories that trees recall" to "Your father loved that tree," the values and memories associated with trees have permeated the Davey brand through print advertising, marketing materials and more. But Davey arborists don't have to tell clients why their trees are special—some clients are willing to share stories on their own. Sales Arborist Nick Crawford, for example, encoun- tered a San Francisco couple whose story reflects sentimental feelings for trees that grew tall in front of their home. According to the husband, his wife grew fond of the trees for the sense of protection they provided her home. The couple's special trees, however, required extra attention when their health began to fail. When it came down to deciding whether the trees' condition required complete removal, it was difficult for the couple to agree. "They would holler, and then stop, smile and laugh about how they were arguing," Crawford says. "The woman couldn't bear the thought of losing the privacy in their living room if the trees had been removed." Just days after accepting Davey's proposal for their tree care services, the husband called Crawford to say his wife had passed away. In her absence, the husband made sure to request pruning services for their trees because "she would want it that way." Crawford's client is a couple whose devotion for trees and for each other illustrates just one connection established between home- owners and their trees. But client stories often involve memories of the trees that provided shade during a hot, summer picnic; trees that witnessed several hours of outdoor activity among neighborhood children; and trees that have grown tall and strong Steve Belluomini (pictured) stands in front of the trees he hired Davey to trim after the passing of his wife, Lola. within the lives of several generations. In the words of a Home & Garden and Fortune 1937 advertisement for Davey services: "Your father loved that tree! Beneath it we planned our home. In its cool shelter you played with boyhood friends… as now your children do. Take care of it, my son!" Although context may change, the authentic feeling of client stories employees construct and discover will never lose significance and value to the service Davey provides. Below are some historical print ads: "You Can't Afford to Lose That Tree," 1937; "Plan Ahead for Your Trees," 1946; "The Priceless Beauty of a Healthy Tree," 1940s; and "Trees Live and Breathe…Just Like You," 1947. 30 | January/February 2014
