THE DAVEY BULLETIN
R/C services' Adrian Smith, PHC coordinator, South Detroit
office, said he's been using the cards with his team.
"We use them in our plant health care and safety meetings
to start a discussion. Each time we do this, we get
feedback, and employees are engaged," Smith said. "I
think keeping everyone engaged is the most important
thing. PHC technicians often work by themselves, and it's
important to keep the lines of communication open."
Joseph Brown, general foreman, NIPSCO account, said
the question, "When and where do you have to be extra
vigilant?" stuck with him.
"When crews are trimming trees, focusing on what's in
front of them, they can't shut out everything that's going
on around them," Brown said. "Whether they're on a
construction site of a new home, or there's road work
down the street, or someone is mowing the yard across
the street, you must stay vigilant. Those distractions could
impact their safety, as well as the safety of people walking
up and down the sidewalk. You must keep everyone safe,
regardless of what's going on."
Four Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) trainings
were held in late spring for Residential/Commercial (R/C)
services, corporate, and Eastern Utility services teams.
Group discussions and exercises during the one-day training
explore how being curious and asking better questions can
increase safety and reliability for operations by applying the
principles of HOP.
A science-based approach, HOP emphasizes understanding
the complex interactions between individuals, processes,
systems, and organizational values, with the goal of
promoting positive outcomes.
New to Davey's HOP training for 2024 is Learning Teams
in a Box, a 100-card question pack each trainee receives.
"Learning Teams in a Box questions are designed to
encourage important discussions to monitor where safety is
strong and where it needs support," said Jon Schmidt, senior
regional safety specialist, health and safety department.
HOP ENCOURAGES OPEN COMMUNICATION AND DISCUSSIONS
Each HOP trainee
receives a 100-card box
of questions to take
back to their offices,
including "What are
some things that
would make you call
an All-Stop?", "What
needs to happen before
you start up again?",
and "What was your
crew's most recent
learning moment?"
Ten Residential/Commercial (R/C) services employees
from the Maier Tree & Lawn, North Minneapolis, South
Minneapolis, South St. Paul, and Twin Cities Wood Products
offices came together for a day of HOP training at the South
Minneapolis office. Additional sessions were held in Detroit,
Michigan for 12 R/C services employees from the Arbor Tree
Service, Detroit Lawncare, North Detroit, Northeast Detroit,
Northwest Detroit, South Detroit, and Toledo offices; in
Dover, Ohio for 15 corporate employees; and in Warsaw,
Indiana for 11 Eastern Utility services employees on the
NIPSCO account.
