FROM THE ARCHIVES
A sugar maple tree planted in the early 1980s at Emma
Willard School in Troy, New York, was recently pruned by
Residential/Commercial services' Albany office employees
Daniel Barnes, foreman, Matthew Coons, trimmer, and
Joseph Hollner, PHC technician.
The Albany office has been working with Emma Willard School,
a boarding and day school for girls in grades nine through
12, for almost a century now, dating back to at least 1927.
"As far as arboriculture goes, we're their go-to for taking
care of the trees," Scott Morris, district manager, Albany
office, said. "We've done a lot of work there over the years.
It's been a good relationship."
A CENTURY OF TREE CARE
The sugar maple planted more than 40 years ago by Davey's
Albany office is pictured on the far right, providing shade to
Emma Willard School commencement ceremony attendees.
According to Emma Willard School's Fall 1978 Bulletin, a
150-year-old oak tree stood where the sugar maple now
stands. Fifteen years prior to that, a Davey crew installed an
underground watering system for the oak by using rainwater
piped in from elsewhere on campus to the tree's roots, as the
buildings surrounding the tree had created a "rain shadow."
