28 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2022 DAVEY PEOPLE DAVEY EMPLOYEE SPEEDS AROUND DIRT TRACKS Ryan Moser, mechanic, West Denver Residential/Commercial office, started dirt track racing when he was five years old when his dad bought him his first quarter midget car. Over 30 years later, Ryan's still racing. Today, Ryan races an 82 Monte Carlo, an (International Motor Contest Association) IMCA Sport Mod Custom Built Tubular Frame vehicle, and a full-size midget car. "The racing community is pretty awesome," Ryan said. "My friends are what keeps me coming back, and the competition." Racing will be a bit different now after losing his dad earlier this year, Ryan said. His dad, Gary Moser, was a Davey employee. Gary also worked as a mechanic in the West Denver R/C office. "He was a big part of our team, and we are doing a smaller schedule this year," Ryan said. "It makes it tough when we've been doing this together for 30 some years." Ryan encourages everyone to experience dirt track racing at least once in their lives. "It's a cool sight to see. It is not just turning left. There is a lot that goes into it," Ryan said. "People are pretty impressed with the speed and how close we are to each other, and the fact we are doing it on dirt." 1. When did you start at Davey, and what was your role? I was an employee owner of The Care of Trees when Davey purchased the company in 2008. I was grandfathered into Davey from The Care of Trees. With The Care of Trees, I was the district manager of the Oakland, California location. 2. What is your current title and responsibilities? My current role is sales arborist and I manage several teams, maintaining and nurturing the trees for clients I have developed over 35 years of tree management. 3. What is one of your most memorable projects you've been a part of? One was the three month helicopter logging project of 3,000 plus dead trees after the Oakland Hills fire in 1992. The terrain was very steep, necessitating the use of a helicopter to lift them off the hills. It was critical that my team cut logs to no more than 3,000 pounds to allow the helicopter to lift them up and over high voltage lines to a processing site. Fortunately, they did a superb job of determining weights and the project went well. There was a time crunch to complete this project, and we performed the work in 40 days. Another project that comes to mind is the 2021 removal of one of the larger Monterey pine trees in the Bay Area measuring almost six feet in diameter and 135-feet high. The tree was in the process of dying from the ongoing drought and we had managed the tree for approximately 35 years. The removal project took five days to complete with a crane and another three days to grind out the stump and roots. Subsequently, we replanted with large 48 to 60-inch boxed beautiful Japanese maple trees. 4. Who is someone at Davey who has had a significant impact on your career? Torrey Young, who was part of the transition from The Care of Trees to Davey, has been a mentor responsible for advancing my career from ISA Certified Arborist ® (we were the second group ever certified in 1984), to becoming an American Society of Consulting Arborists (ACSA) Registered Consulting Arborist ® in 1992, to becoming an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist ® in 2007. His integrity, character, and passion for trees has been a foundation for my development. GET TO KNOW… DAVID NELSON David Nelson sales arborist, East Bay office Last year, the larger national events Ryan Moser raced in were the IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa, the Bristol Dirt Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Las Vegas Dirt Nationals and The Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Over the course of his racing career, Moser has been ninth in the nation, won four state championships, four series championships, eight track championships and has over 60 wins. Moser races with the Davey logo on his vehicles as a thank you to the West Denver office for supporting his racing efforts. Ryan wanted to thank Derek Fox, district manager, for his help and support.
