RETIREE STAYS ACTIVE WITH MUSIC, TRAVEL AND
HOMETOWN TREE BOARD
Jeff Matheney retired eight years ago, following 32
years of service. Matheney began his Davey career
at the Indianapolis office as a spray feed technician.
He also worked at the New Jersey office as a district
manager before joining the Atlanta office in 1988.
After retiring, Matheney moved back to his hometown,
Madison, Indiana, with his wife Mona, and their dog
Copper, a mixed beagle dachshund. They live in the
historic district in a yellow brick ranch shotgun house
built in 1866. "I volunteer on the city's tree board,
giving them advice they don't want to hear," Matheney
said with a laugh.
He also plays bass guitar and sings with the Prairie
Creek Band, a rock and roll band he began playing
with in 1974. He and Mona enjoy traveling around the
country on their Harley-Davidsons, and they've also
traveled to France, England, and Ireland.
Hunting deer, wild boar, and elk has taken Matheney
to many places, including Georgia, New Mexico,
Colorado, Ohio, and Tennessee. He traveled to Alaska
and hunted caribou in the Arctic Circle with his
nephew, who is retired from the U.S. Air Force.
Matheney has two daughters and four grandsons.
Matheney recalls several important projects he took
part in during his tenure with Davey. "During my time
at the New Jersey office, we teamed up with Davey
Resource Group, and I managed a tree inventory on
a 600 acre cemetery in Edison, New Jersey. Another
project involved maintaining the vista view of the
Chattahoochee River in the Sandy Springs area of
Atlanta. I was really proud of that one, as it involved

JEFF MATHENEY'S ADVICE:
1. Do not circumvent safety protocol. You think
a life-changing accident won't happen, but
it certainly can.
2. Buy, buy, buy Davey stock – as much of it
as you can! Do not skimp on the stock
subscription offerings. Owning stock has
treated me very well.
3. Davey is a long-term employer. Stay with
them, and they will take care of you.
4. Don't sit idle. Take the time to study, learn
and grow with Davey.

extensive work and maintenance. Lastly, I was involved
in an annual Christmas tree recycling program for the
day after Christmas in conjunction with Home Depot
in Atlanta. This project is ongoing with Davey currently,"
Matheney said.
