5 July/August 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN At Davey, we pride ourselves on succeeding while exhibiting integrity, expertise, resolve and leadership. We all win when we do our jobs the right way. John Davey's original motto of "Do it right or not at all" not only means doing it "right" technically, but also doing something when you know it's the "right" thing to do. That shared commitment, conveyed by Martin L. Davey, Sr., in a letter to his son over 70 years ago, is even more relevant in today's increasingly complex, risky and regulated world. Compliance isn't simply checking a box. As humans, we have a moral obligation to look out for each other. As such, we expect everyone to do things the right way for ourselves, our teammates and our clients. That's how we win; by competing fairly and with integrity. Our collective commitment to safety, ethical practices and compliance with all relevant federal, state and local laws, has been a bedrock of our culture. We take that commitment seriously. Davey's incredible growth, coupled with changes in legal and regulatory areas, means we must educate ourselves and take advantage of resources available to all employees to ensure a culture of compliance in difficult and complex situations. To do so, we have invested in resources and processes to guide and protect you and the company. For example, Davey employees must ensure the company only hires and retains colleagues whose work status adheres to all applicable laws in the U.S. and Canada. To fail to fully focus on these processes, or to neglect to respond properly and adequately to someone who raises a concern on this topic, puts our business ASK THE CEO: COMPLIANCE IS DOING IT 'RIGHT' Pat Covey Davey President and CEO at risk. Failing to meet our shared expectation has consequences for not only you but the Davey Company as a whole. This can lead to disappointing outcomes, including separation of long-serving employees. To give you helpful resources and all the tools and support that you need, Davey has developed several key initiatives that serve to further enhance our company-wide compliance programs. First, we appointed our first chief compliance officer, our General Counsel Erika Schoenberger, who leads the compliance program and reports directly to me. Second, we established a new compliance team comprised of a cross-section of both operations and functional leaders to drive the execution of these priorities. We established a steering committee comprised of: myself, Schoenberger; Joe Paul, executive vice president, chief financial officer and secretary; Jim Stief, executive vice president, U.S. Residential services; Brent Repenning, executive vice president of U.S. Utility and Davey Resource Group; and Greg Ina, executive vice president of the Davey Institute. These are all important steps. But to achieve our ultimate compliance objectives we need every Davey employee to commit to monitoring and addressing compliance with policies and procedures at all levels of the company. All our hiring managers have recently received additional training, we continue to enhance our online and in person training, and to invest in tools and people that can act as resources to assist when navigating tough calls. Our board and leadership's message and expectations are simple, and clear: If you see something, say something. That is part of the shared commitment to "Doing it right or not at all" that we make to each other as Davey employees every day. RESOLVE From office to field, they displayed the utmost professionalism at every turn. We look forward to entrusting the Davey team with any future projects. Best wishes for the summer. Dillon Conner, Daniel Misch, Stephen Stone We wanted you to know how much we are enjoying our nature trail at Covenant Woods since you improved the surface with wood chips, handrails, log steps and wider perimeters. All of those improvements make walking safer and more pleasant. Thank you and your crew for the many hours of your hard work. My husband and I spent many hours developing the trail and identifying plants there. Now you have made it perfect. Jo and Jack Mitchell Mechanicsville, Virginia
