20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2018 MY DAVEY COLLABORATION HELPS DOMINION ENERGY A pilot program for Dominion Energy Ohio showcased how Davey Resource Group (DRG) and Residential/ Commercial (R/C) services can serve the client's goal of identifying and maintaining its natural gas pipeline rights of way. Looking to maintain 500 miles of pipeline, Dominion tasked Davey with developing a turn-key solution for 50 miles in Northeast Ohio to see if it could be applied to the larger network. Kelly Kiel, project manager, DRG, said the work started with her team mailing out postcards to property owners where Davey employees might enter to identify and catalogue pipeline rights of way. "In Ashtabula County alone, we sent out close to 700 postcards prior to entering any property," she said. "We did all the easement research for Dominion to verify the property owners' rights. It was a lot of courthouse work and developing the mailing list." Above left: Davey R/C crews in Ohio collaborated with Davey Resource Group to manage right-of-way clearance for Dominion Energy Ohio. Showcasing Davey's solution-oriented capabilities, Kiel's team took files provided by the client and used DRG geographic information system (GIS) mapping software to overlay data onto the Ashtabula County auditor's office property maps. That let the team easily extract property owner information to compile the mailing list for sending notification fliers. "It's definitely a multi-layered project," Kiel said. Next, the DRG team traversed the rights of way and found the gas pipelines using handheld pipeline locator equipment. The project stipulated 10 feet of open space on both sides of the pipeline, so DRG crews tagged trees that needed removed to meet the requirements. The work included locating each tree, identifying it, taking a photograph and uploading all the data to a software program the client could access and monitor in real-time. After DRG planned the work, crews from several Ohio R/C offices took over. Above right: R/C crews from eight different offices worked on the Dominion Energy Ohio project.
