11 May/June 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN LEARNING TO IDENTIFY HAZARD TREES Tom Schwend, senior consulting utility forester, Davey Resource Group (DRG), organized a hazard tree training program for the newest members of the DRG San Diego team. The reliability tree training focuses on the identification of tree defects that could lead to failures, Schwend said. Allen. UTILITY LEADERSHIP SEMINAR HELD IN KENT Thirty account supervisors from Eastern Utility services attended the Utility Leadership Seminar in Kent in January. Attendees included: Shane Adams, Raymond Ammerman, Neal Avery, Numerous Utility services accounts were represented at January's supervisor training session. with a mallet to identify decay and looked at multiple defects. It also covered the use of the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) matrix that helps foresters with overall tree evaluation and hazard mitigation. "One of the most challenging things we ask our foresters to do is making hazard tree identifications," he said. Brandon Behnke, Raymond Betances, Harold Danielson, Mitch Durham, Michael Greco, Dan Gross, Maxwell Hackney, Jason Henry, Stephen Jaskolka, Michael Ledford, Anthony Longoria, Helio Martinez, Jeff McKinney, Dan Oshetsky, Joseph Pate, Riley Rubio, Hector Sanchez, Michael Schatz, Josue Silva, Paul Spier, Gary Thomas, Ron Walters, Tim West, Eric Williams and Walter Wiltse. The training took place in the College Grove area at Chollas Lake Park, an area primarily populated with eucalyptus trees. "It was a treasure trove for the program. You couldn't go 10 feet without finding a defect," Schwend said. He said they plan to hold the hazard tree training on an annual basis.
