FIELD NOTES
SPRUCING UP FOR A PRESIDENTIAL VISIT
A rainbow shines
over the U.S.S.
Arizona Memorial
in Pearl Harbor, one
of several locations
U.S. President
Donald Trump visited
during his stop in
Hawaii en route
to a tour of Asia.
Davey crews handled
several landscape
care requests for
the president's
Hawaiian visit.
Hawaii crews from Commercial Landscape Services and
the Davey Tree Surgery Company provided landscape
care services in preparation for a visit by U.S. President
Donald Trump.
Jaime Buenrostro, general foreman, Hunt, Ohana Military
Communities, said crews pruned trees to eliminate
deadwood and raise the canopy about 15 feet at the
property where the president and his team received a
briefing from the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Commander
before visiting the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
Buenrostro said the three-day project was performed in
advance of the visit at the request of the Secret Service,
who wanted the canopy raised to improve sight lines
around the property.
"Kenny Tyler, one of the lead foremen in charge, said the
property was abuzz with Secret Service staff prepping for
the president's arrival," Buenrostro said.
Cinde York, alternate contract manager, Ohana Military
Communities, said the Secret Service also requested
the pruning of several large hedges at the property,
re-installation of a stone walkway and sanding and leveling
stones on a back patio.
"These were all safety-related requests," York said. "The
Secret Service asked for the work so nobody could hide,
nobody could get hurt and nobody could hide anything
detrimental to the president's entourage."
Davey employees who took part in the work included Hirama
Ah Key, Alan Ayala, Jofler Balisacan, Villamor Farinas, Cody
Hamme, Kyle Kaalele, Torben Larsen, Tasesa Patu, David
Ramirez and Kenneth Tyler.
"
I don't let any truck out of the shop unless it's at
110 percent. We are talking about employees' lives
here. As we work on the vehicles, we think about
the safety of the employees in the field and make
sure nothing is going to happen to them. We are
like a family here, and we want to help each other
as much as possible. Personally, I'm an employee-
owner and purchase stock every paycheck. I take
advantage of anything Davey has to offer – the
stock program, 401k, etc. – because I've seen what
it's done for my older co-workers.
