7 January/February 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN NEW YORK CLIMBER COMPETES Daniel Barnes, foreman, Albany R/C office, placed second in the New York State Tree Climbing Competition in Tarrytown, New York, in June. This was Barnes' fifth time competing, but his first time making it to the Masters' Challenge. He finished in third place in the preliminary events out of 30 competitors. The Masters' Challenge consisted of the top three climbers. "I was really proud to represent Davey Tree and hope to be able to win the state title next year and represent Davey at the next level of competition," Barnes said. Left: The Masters' Challenge was nerve wracking for Barnes, who said the crowd size increased to more than 30 spectators compared with maybe half a dozen watching during the preliminary events. LUMBERJILL PLACES 9TH ON TOP STAGE Alex Miller, a utility consulting arborist for Davey Resource Group in Rochester, New York, and Davey's very own LumberJill, competed in the Women's Division Northeast Professional Qualifier for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS championship in 2017. Miller made it into the top 16 women in the U.S. The competition included three events: underhand chop, stock saw and singlebuck. The top four women in the next pool of eight would go on to the championship, and Miller fell just two points short of that goal after battling back from a disqualification in the underhand chop by placing 1st in stock saw. She ended the weekend with an impressive rank of 9th in the U.S. "I showed a lot of people that I can compete at the highest level, and I'm honored to have been a part of the first ever Women's STIHL Series," Miller said. "I got to be a part of history, and I can't wait to see where the sport goes for women!"
