6 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2017 DAVEY RANKED 13TH LARGEST EMPLOYEE-OWNED COMPANY The Davey Tree Expert Company is the 13th largest employee-owned company in the U.S., according to a report from the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO). The NCEO 2017 Employee Ownership 100 list includes the nation's largest companies that are at least 50 percent owned by an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) or other broad-based employee ownership plan. "The entrepreneurial attitude that accompanies employee ownership is a driving factor in Davey's success," said Pat Covey, Davey's President and CEO. "Fostering and encouraging that employee-ownership culture is integral to the Davey Company's continued growth and strong performance." Collectively, the top 100 employee-owned companies on the 2017 list employ more than 615,000 people. Davey has been an employee-owned company for 38 years since employees purchased the company from the John Davey family. With over 9,000 employees, the company continues to progress and grow under employee ownership. FIELD NOTES CYCLING WITH AN OCEAN VIEW Anne Fenkner and other riders gathered around the ceremonial tree they planted as part of the Britton Fund Ride. Anne Fenkner, project developer, Davey Resource Group, at first didn't plan to ride a bicycle 100 miles along the Pacific Ocean while in San Diego for the Western Chapter International Society of Arboriculture Conference. But, a colleague convinced her to bring her bike and participate in the Britton Fund Ride as part of "Team Davey." The Britton Fund provides research and education to benefit the field of arboriculture and urban forestry with an emphasis on issues in the geographical areas of California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii, she said. Per the Britton Fund website, their research grant programs help fund studies about "trees fit for the future, trees and wildlife, tree fungi and more." As part of the Davey team, Fenkner raised $1,575 for the fund and was one of the top fundraising individuals. "It was a wonderful opportunity to see this beautiful country of ours, raise funds for urban forestry and meet and re-meet friends," Fenkner said.
