Wimer was nominated by her husband Scott Haws and Davey's Harry Claypool, Mark Vaughn, Kevin Bauer and Colleen Reed. Per the magazine's selection process, nominees are "chosen based on their career acumen, community service and trusteeship and personal and professional achievements." Wimer was honored, along with other recipients, at a ceremony on June 21 at the Masonic Temple in Canton, Ohio. Congrats Laura! Photo Credit: Stark County About Magazine R.J. Laverne, manager of education and training, Davey Institute, won two awards from Cleveland State University. R.J. won an award from the College of Graduate Studies for excellence in dissertation research in law, education, social sciences and humanities. Dr. Wendy Kellogg, dissertation chair, presented Dr. Laverne with the award. The second award was from Levin College of Urban Affairs for co-authoring a research paper published in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry, titled The Economic Value of Tree Preservation in a Weak Land Development Market Region. "Hopefully, these awards bring positive publicity to our company," Laverne said. Congratulations R.J.! Marjorie (Margie) Conner, general counsel and assistant secretary, was elected in May as chair of the board of directors of the University Hospitals Portage Medical Center. The board works with the hospital staff to provide quality medical services to the community. Currently, the board is working with the Hospital Foundation to raise money to renovate and modernize the emergency room facility. "My objective as a board member is to work with the hospital staff and administration to continue to make UH Portage Medical Center a sustainable medical facility that addresses the health care needs of the people of the Portage County and surrounding areas," Conner said. Congratulations Margie! Dennis Dotson retired Aug. 27, 2017, after 35 years of service. Dotson was an area supervisor for the Davey Tree Surgery Company. He started as a climber in 1982. In 1985, he was promoted to district foreman. He was promoted to area supervisor in 1989. He was promoted to supervisor in 2002 and then promoted to area manager in 2010. He is a past Davey President's Council member. Randy L. Krantz retired May 21 after 4 years of service. Krantz was a foreman on the Detroit Edison account. Steven Smith retired June 4, 2017, after 17 years of service. Smith was a foreman in the Indianapolis office. Jeff Stevens retired Sept. 24, 2017, after 37 years of service. Stevens was fleet operations manager in the corporate office. He started with Davey in 1980 at the Kent Shop in the parts department. RETIREMENTS Anand Persad, manager, arboriculture and plant sciences, was recently appointed president of the Arboriculture and Research Education Academy (AREA) of the International Society of Arboriculture and chair of the Utility Arborists Association (UAA) of North America Research Committee. "The role of science in any community based effort is often guided by a core focus on providing solutions-based research and engaging prudent research support systems," Persad said. "I know that with common goals in supporting arboricultural research and working together collaboratively we all win." Both positions are two-year terms. Congrats Anand! Dennis Dotson
