The Davey Bulletin | May/June 2017
In a three-day felling class, 15 Davey
employees learned how to skillfully
fell 15 trees.
The felling class, which is a part of
Davey's larger Coach Mentor Skills
Enhancement Program, brought
attendees from across vice president
Phil Snyder's Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast operating groups. Jason
Parker, district manager, hosted the
program at the North Philadelphia
Residential/Commercial office.
"Essentially, this class is a way for
attendees to enhance skill sets
related to chainsaw operations,
tree felling techniques and coaching
others," said Corey Shepard, regional
safety specialist.
FELLING CLASS STUDENTS LEARN TO COACH COWORKERS
Shepard coached the attendees
through Davey's detailed approach
to felling: Six Steps to Precision
Felling. "This is a detailed process
that strengthens an employee's tree
removal decision-making skills around
go or no-go when felling is a suitable
option," Shepard said.
In this program, each attendee was
assigned a tree to fell. They created
a felling plan for their trees, and after
they felled the tree the attendees
went back and measured their
accuracy relative to their original plan,
Shepard said.
"We coach them to see the details in
the felling process. By doing so we
enhance their ability to instruct others,"
Shepard said.
By slowing down the process, and
focusing on details in real-world
applications, attendees left with
some new tools to help coaching
others, Shepard said.
Trees in downtown Edmonton, Alberta,
were decorated and wrapped in yarn
by community artists, volunteers and
Davey Tree Expert Company of Canada,
Limited, employees to promote fiber art.
For two years, Kevin Cassells, district
manager, Edmonton office, has helped
the Focus on Fibre Art Association
"yarn bomb" seven trees in downtown
Edmonton to promote their annual
competition and exhibit.
"The idea behind the project is to
get the city more involved in art,"
Cassells said.
Yarn bombing has grown in popularity
and is a type of public art in which
knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre is
wrapped around trees, bicycle racks
and other similar public objects.
TREES HIT BY 'YARN
BOMB' IN CANADA
Cassells' two-man crew used a bucket
truck to help attach the installation in
those hard-to-reach areas in the trees.
"We've been working for the city of
Canada crews helped decorate trees for a fibre art exhibit in Edmonton, Alberta.
Edmonton since 2014," Cassells said.
"So, whenever there is a project that
is important to the community they
reach out to us for help."
Felling class attendees included CJ Nichols, Isaiah Smalt, John Schlieman, Shawn Welch,
Greg Bennett, Josean Carradero, Dave Frost, Phil Sabo, Matt Keeley, Erik Winter, Dave Mul-
lin, Jesstin Smith, Charles Deonarine, Jason Rizzo, Florentino Beltran and Corey Shepard.
