Smart Business Magazine in
Cleveland has awarded Davey a
Business Longevity Award to mark
the Davey Company's 136 years of
operation in North America.
Davey, founded in 1880, earned
recognition on the list of 46 Ohio
companies – with Davey being the
fourth most senior firm – celebrating
50 years or more in business.
Other, large firms that received
longevity awards, but that are younger
than Davey, included Lincoln Electric
(1895), Dominion East Ohio (1898) and
King Nut Companies (1927).
Smart Business magazine and the
Western Reserve Historical Society
partnered to establish the awards.

The Davey Tree Expert Company is
the 13th largest employee-owned
company in the U.S., according to
data from the National Center for
Employee Ownership (NCEO).
The NCEO's 2016 Employee
Ownership 100 list includes the
nation's largest companies that
are at least 50 percent owned by
an employee stock ownership
plan (ESOP) or other broad-based
employee ownership plan.
Davey, which employs over 8,600
people, has been employee-owned
since 1979 when employees
successfully bought the company
from the family of its founder,
John Davey.
"Employee ownership has been
a driving force behind our past and
present successes," said Karl
Warnke, Davey's chairman and CEO.
"Encouraging and supporting
employee ownership, and the culture
it fosters, will remain a key to strong
performances by the Davey Company
in the future."

The 2016 list shows Davey's growth,
as the company ranked No. 17 on
the 2014 list of the largest employee-
owned firms when it employed more
than 7,800. In 2015, Davey ranked
15th on the list and employed more
than 8,000.
Collectively, the top employee-owned
companies on the 2016 list employ
more than 650,000 people. Across
the U.S., there are about 7,000 ESOPs
covering almost 14 million participants,
according to research conducted by
the NCEO. Details on this research
