20 The Davey Bulletin | September/October 2016 2 ISLANDS, 1 BIG PROJECT FOR 15 DAVEY TEAMS It's not every day Davey crews from four different states and service lines mobilize to work on a massive tree project on an island. Two historic islands sit off the San Francisco Bay. For more than a decade, developers planned to turn both Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island into new destinations to live and play – with 8,000 housing units, new hotels and parks. In May 2015, the commercial devel- opment plans were approved by the Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA). This $1 billion development project opened a lot of doors for tree care industry work. Originally, another tree care firm was contracted but was unable to meet the projected deadline. That's when Davey's Nick Crawford, sales arborist for the San Francisco R/C office, received a call from the TIDA, the public-private partnership that is responsible for the Islands. Crawford accepted the challenge and knew he needed to mobilize crews quickly from California and beyond. In less than a week, Davey employees from both R/C and Davey Surgery Company arrived on the island, travel- ing from Montana, Nevada and Texas. "We built a lot of trust with the client early," Crawford said. "We impressed them with how quickly we were able to mobilize." Getting the project completed by Jan. 15, 2016, was the top priority for the client, Crawford said. Delays in the early stages of the development plan could have pushed the whole project back by as much as a year. MY DAVEY Davey's Jaime Merritt took a remarkable above-the-canopy shot on Yerba Buena Island. Davey's Robert Jackson, Alfonso Arroyo, Israel Tinajero and Leonel Penado worked together to transfer removed trees on Yerba Buena Island. Behind them, construction progresses on the San Francisco and Oakland Bay Bridge Interstate 80 ramp.
