The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial honors crewmembers lost when
the ship was bombed by Japanese fighters in 1941 during WWII.
The memorial straddles the remains of the sunken ship, seen here
from the bow of the U.S.S. Missouri, which is anchored nearby.

A PEARL OF A CLIENT FOR CLS, SURGERY CREWS
For most, Hawaii is merely a dream
vacation destination, but for about
50 Davey employees Hawaii is where
they spend their days caring for the
landscapes of two military bases.
Employees from Commercial
Landscape Services (CLS) and the
Davey Surgery Company started
caring for over 6,700 residential
homes that are part of Joint Base Pearl
Harbor-Hickam and Marine Corps Base
Hawaii on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
These 6,700 homes are located
throughout the island and comprise
35 separate neighborhoods – housing
top-ranking officers for both the U.S.
Navy and Marines.
"We do every aspect of the residential
landscaping," said Blane Pshigoda,
government/projects division manager.
"We are able to be a one-stop shop
for our client. Davey's strength is
being able to take care of not only
the landscaping, but also having one
source to now answer the client's tree
care questions and take care of those
needs as well."
Before Davey took over in January,
the client, Hunt, the firm managing the
residential housing, had to work with
two separate contractors to manage
tree and lawn care for the base's
residential units. Now, Davey CLS
crews manage irrigation, mowing and
all other grounds maintenance work.
Davey Surgery employees handle
all the tree pruning that cannot be
reached from the ground by CLS crews.
"This is a first for us working with the
CLS folks, so being able to collaborate
is a good experience for us," said Larry
Evans, vice president, operations,
Davey Surgery.
Working at Pearl Harbor affords Davey
employees the solemn duty of working
near some of the historic memorial
sites from the Dec. 7, 1941 attack during
WWII. Sites include the U.S.S. Arizona
Memorial and the U.S.S. Missouri
Memorial. Visitors to the Missouri
memorial pass through landscaping
cared for by Davey, and Davey crews
work on housing that abuts shorelines
near both monuments.
"It is breathtaking when you get over
there," Evans said. "Our employees
