July/August 2016 | 19 Employee and retiree shareholders packed the classrooms at the Davey Institute for the 2016 Shareholders' Meeting. Chairman and CEO Karl Warnke spotlighted six Davey employee-owners who exemplify company culture. Pictured from left are: Scott Carlin, vice president of asset management services, Davey Resource Group; Alexandra Kluczarov, administrative assistant, Davey Resource Group; Luther Sanderson, supervisor, Jones-Onslow account; Cynthia Beck, buyer, fleet management; Eduardo Medina, recruiter/trainer; and Lou Meyer, plant health care technician, North Cincinnati office. Chairman and CEO Karl Warnke chose six Davey employee-owners who exemplify company culture to spotlight at the 2016 Shareholders' Meeting. "When you bring good people into an organization, they create the kind of culture you're looking for," Warnke said. "You're not going to find our culture in a best-practices guideline somewhere. It's unique, and it's created by Davey employees." Lou Meyer, plant health care techni- cian: "Lou has displayed an eagerness to get involved with the company," Warnke said. Meyer, who has three years of Davey Company service, is a 2016 D.I.T.S. graduate. Warnke said he represents youthful intelligence, a willingness to learn and a desire to make one's own way in the company. Cynthia Beck, buyer, fleet manage- ment: "She represents determination, inner strength, the ability to persevere and an unwavering commitment to the company," Warnke said. Beck has 41 years of service, and both of her parents worked for Davey. Eduardo Medina, recruiter/trainer: "He's a great teacher and leader," Warnke said. Medina has eight years of service. Warnke said Medina represents pride and expertise in our traditional business: arboriculture. "He's a classic Davey Tree man, with PERSONIFYING THE DAVEY CULTURE an exception. He is bilingual, and that in itself really separates him from all others," Warnke said. Scott Carlin, vice president of asset management services, Davey Resource Group: "Scott approaches everything with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude," Warnke said. Carlin has 12 years of service. Warnke said he represents objectivity and a new perspective as part of company culture. Alexandra Kluczarov, administrative assistant, Davey Resource Group: "The minute she could, which is one year after you're an employee, she decided to purchase some stock," Warnke said. Kluczarov, who has three years of service, started buying stock through payroll deduction – buying portions of a share at a time with a $12 bi-weekly deduction – and has increased her deductions at every opportunity. "That certainly, to me, speaks volumes about a person," Warnke said. Luther Sanderson, supervisor, Jones-Onslow account: "Luther is a role model," Warnke said. "He's a man of integrity, and he's a very significant stockholder." Sanderson, who has 51 years of service, advocates employee- ownership to every colleague he meets. Warnke said he represents past, present and future success. "There are literally thousands of such people within the Davey Company," he said. "Our culture is not fabricated or superficial. It's very real. It's very genuine, and it's deep. It brings out the best in everybody in this company." Warnke added Davey's stock perfor- mance is excelling in tough economic times thanks to the strength of the company's people and culture. STRONG START TO 2016 Management also touched on company progress in the first quarter of 2016. Covey pointed to a fast start in R/C operations as a positive sign for 2016. R/C sales are 18 percent ahead of first-quarter sales in 2015. Overall, total company revenue in the first quarter of 2016 is up nearly 4 percent over the first quarter of 2015. "I went back in the records to 2007 and there's not been a year where we got out of the gate that quickly," Covey said. "For the rest of the year, our focus will be on continuous improvement in safety performance, recruiting and training and on bottom line enhancement."
