Davey employees started their morning with a group stretch at the Davey Personal Excellence Seminar at the Davey Institute in Kent, Ohio. goal of Road to Zero every day." With so many service lines represented at the seminar, each attendee brought a unique perspective to the company's outlook on safety and what it means to them. By telling personal stories, employees shared emotional moments in their career when unsafe actions led to close calls – and some serious accidents. "People are fallible," says Joe Engberg, manager of safety program support and the lead session facilitator. "Everyone makes mistakes." However, it's Davey's goal to minimize errors and mitigate the consequences of errors with safety tools, such as pre- and post-job briefings, active listening, close-call communicators and job observations–to name a few. No matter where you work, whether at a desk, in the field, climbing a tree or driving a Davey truck, safety needs to be a value not just a priority. What does safety mean to you? Complete the S.T.A.R. Self-Check: Stop, Think, Act, and Review. This self-disciplined mental explanation tool focuses individual attention before, during, and after performing a specific task. Self-Checking is particularly effective for skill-based, repetitive tasks. Peer Check: Use a peer or other person to observe and provide feedback on an individual's behavior when performing critical steps. Effective feedback will help to ensure correct performance of the task. TOOLS TO KEEP YOU SAFE It is the policy of The Davey Tree Expert Company that every employee, including management and officers, will implement, monitor and enforce Company safety programs related to incident prevention in accordance with the policies and procedures developed by the corporate Safety Department and risk management oversight process. We will be consistent and vigilant with safe- guarding our employees, customers, and the general public from preventable accidents as related to our performed services and enforcing our safety policies. As our management team focuses on The Vision 20/20 strategic plan, we must escalate our commitment and act decisively toward accident prevention, and toward the safety and well-being of each employee. This priority defines our brand and emphasizes the value we place on each employee. Incidents not only affect our employees, but also lead to efficiency declines, customer dissatisfaction, economic loss and loss of brand integrity – all of which are unacceptable. Therefore, to reaffirm our policy: All employees of the Davey Company are held accountable for providing the leadership necessary to achieve maximum control and prevention of accidents. Every employee will actively support and practice the Company's standards of safety performance as part of their conditions of employment as referenced in our Code of Ethics. Karl J.
