12 | March/April 2016 Davey got the ball rolling fast in 2016 with the inception of two new R/C offices: East San Antonio, Texas, and North Denver, Colorado. Both offices tell a different story on our path to smart growth, one of the top five pillars to success on Davey's company-wide strategic plan. Andrew Ferguson, operations manager of the South Central Operating Group, says Denver's tree care market continues to grow rapidly. "The new Denver office has been created out of the existing three territories where they conjoined in the middle, areas which historically have been under-serviced," Ferguson says. "There is ample growth potential there." Kevin Marks was promoted from Assistant District Manager of the Boulder R/C office to District Manager at the new North Denver office. Marks will now lead at least 10 crew members, both newly hired and transfers, to help service the Denver area. The new East San Antonio R/C office is also well aligned with smart growth. Davey was already growing in eastern San Antonio, but the area's geography made it difficult to service efficiently. "East San Antonio is a rapidly growing, very profitable service segment and this expansion puts a flag in the ground in a great location to capitalize on that," Ferguson says. Mark Mann was promoted from sales arborist at the San Antonio office, now named the West San Antonio R/C office, to District Manager of the East San Antonio R/ C office. Ferguson is excited about the new opportunities the two expansions provide. "As far as R/C goes, expanding our service area is a benchmark to success," Ferguson says. SAN ANTONIO, DENVER R/C EXPAND BOARD BULLETIN The removal of this dead ash tree was featured in the film "Trees in Trouble." This Arbor Day, PBS stations around the U.S. will air the new documentary "Trees in Trouble," which focuses on southwestern Ohio communities as they battle the effects of invasive insects devouring the region's trees. The film combines urban forestry history, policy issues and tree care science to explain how trees across the country are rapidly being lost to pests, such as the emerald ash borer, and threats like land development, invasive plants and climate change. Davey's Jenny Gulick, urban forestry consultant for Davey Resource Group in Cincinnati, is featured prominently as an expert source in the film, and Davey crews are also shown in action. "Arborists have been preaching and talking to people about the crises facing our trees for years," Gulick says. "I've been doing that in the normal ways through one-on-one visits with clients or at conferences being a speaker, but I've never been in a documentary film." The half-hour documentary is set to air nationally on PBS stations on or near Arbor Day, April 29. Check local listings for days and times. The film also is available online at TreesInTrouble.com. "The film is a fantastic education and marketing tool," Gulick says.
