10 | March/April 2016 NOTES FIELD Trees are an important conversation topic, no matter what language you speak. That's why Davey's Chicago The Care of Trees (TCOT) office agreed to teach a bilingual tree lesson to Henry Lloyd Elementary School students in both English and Spanish, so everyone could understand the importance of trees. District Manager Auxilio "Chilo" Tovar, a native Spanish speak- er, recruited Alison Herrell, sales arborist, to help. Herrell and Tovar took turns teaching six classes, first in English then in Spanish, about trees, the tree care industry and the equipment tree professionals use. They brought in "show-and-tell" items for the kids, including a bladeless chainsaw and personal protective equipment (PPE). "A big challenge is people in the city don't understand the importance of trees because there are so few," Herrell says. "Our goal of this day was emphasizing at a very young age that trees are important." EVERYONE SPEAKS 'TREE' Davey's Alison Herrell (pictured left) and Auxilio Tovar (pictured right) teach six elementary school classes about trees in English and Spanish. The holidays are a time that we all look forward to each year, but for some this time of year is not so joyful. Davey's corporate office works closely with the Portage County United Way each year to brighten the season for these members of the Kent-area community. For the past few years, employees participated in the United Way's Angel Tree Program by putting gifts under a tree in the cor- porate office that would then be distributed to 50 different children in the area. Additionally, Davey's corporate office participated in a new program for United Way this year called Share the Warmth. Corporate employees donated winter clothing items to be distributed to 4 different agencies in Portage County. Items collected for Share the Warmth included dozens of hats, gloves, scarves and cowls.
