Communities that plant together,
grow together.
Members of the Bridgeport,
Pennsylvania, community agreed the
best way to grow their borough's urban
canopy was to plan a tree-planting day
each spring and fall. The Pennsylvania
Horticulture Society (PHS) generously
agreed to sponsor the plantings.
Davey's Chris Marshall, assistant
district manager of the King of Prussia
R/C office, and client experience
coordinator Jennifer Seward joined the
borough community members and
children in the fall for a day of laughter,
learning and tree planting.
Bridgeport Borough Manager Don Curley, Davey's Assistant District Manager
Chris Marshall (far right) and Bridgeport Council Member Mark Barbee planted
10 new trees in the community.
BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH CANOPY
NOTES
FIELD
Davey's Assistant District Manager Chris Marshall's
daughter Katie (pictured far left) joined community
children to help plant during Bridgeport's tree planting day.
"I have helped Chris with two of
the plantings," Seward says. "He's
such a big part of the community."
Marshall helped map out where to
plant the trees, and he picked up all
needed equipment and trees on
planting day. This year, Bridgeport's
Memorial Park was the dedicated area
for this community event.
Marshall became involved with
Brideport's Tree Planting event through
the PHS Tree Tender program, an
initiative to educate Pennsylvania
community members about tree care
and the importance of a flourishing
canopy. Marshall enjoys working with
fellow Tree Tenders to grow the city's
urban forest – he even brought his
daughter, Katie, to help plant.
"The day was a great way to
demonstrate to my daughter what's
happening in the community," says
Marshall. "Also to teach her how to
properly plant a tree."
Memorial Park's tree canopy grew
by 10 unique bare root trees that day,
including sugar maples, crabapples,
Japanese lilacs, red maples and honey
locusts.
One of the 10 trees planted was
dedicated in loving memory of a late
community member.
