Road to Zero
Wyatt Gauci
trimmer trainee at the Boulder R/C office
He has experience with other tree care
companies prior to joining Davey 1½
years ago and notices the increased
emphasis Davey places on safety in
comparison to others. He loves climbing
trees, "being a kid," making a mess
and being physical outdoors. He notices
aspects of his military experience
reflected in the field, down to similar
feelings of camaraderie he witnesses
among fellow employees.
Not becoming complacent
is the key to a safe culture.
Once we become more
confident in skill and ability,
it's important to not take
safety for granted. Being safe
is all about paying attention
and being mindful of your
surroundings—the area
in which you're working.
I appreciate Davey's effort to
be mindful of the equipment
employees use because in
the end, everyone wants
to go home safe.

Brice Kundinger
foreman on the Wisconsin
Coops account
He has instilled safety regulations in
himself ever since he began working
for Davey 10 years ago. He works safe
so he can "get up and go to work the
next day," and he takes pride in
thinking that way every day.
We start and end our days
with safety; and we practice
safety at every time in
between. After all, everyone
wants to go home at
the end of the day—myself
and the other crewmember
I work with. We look out for
each other, and when some-
one else comes along, we
make sure we're on the same
page before starting a job.
We double check our safety
standards and procedures
so they become habits.

Osmar Mejia
foreman at the South Chicago R/C office
He has participated in several training
programs during his 17 years of service
with Davey. Both the advanced arborist
programs and the crew leader trainings
he completed included opportunities
to focus on safety and its importance.
Whether referring to the safety of a
person or a company as a whole,
Mejia says both are important.
Safety is priority. We must
remember our decisions
may affect whether we bring
fellow employees home to
their families at the end of
the day. Our team puts a
lot of emphasis on safety;
a lot of communication
about safety happens at our
office. Just being a good
example to other employees
when it comes to being
safe on the job provides a
humongous reward.

Safety Matters
N
o matter the location at which you work,
the service line in which you serve or
the role you represent for Davey, safety matters.
We've asked several employees working in
different capacities for the company for their
thoughts about Davey's safety culture and its
effects on the everyday work routine. Here
are some employees' observations and ideas.
