T
ony Greene can remember riding his
bicycle through eucalyptus trees in Hosp
Grove, located near his childhood home in
Carlsbad, California, years ago.
This year Greene, senior consulting utility
forester for Davey Resource Group (DRG),
had another opportunity to help revive that
same grove, which has been gradually
dwindling in recent years.
"While we used to help choose and deliver
the trees, this year we planted them," Greene
says, adding San Diego Gas & Electric coordi-
nates the event and delegates responsibilities
to volunteers.
On the day after National Arbor Day, Greene
and other DRG employees and their families
joined local volunteers to plant trees at Hosp
Grove. DRG volunteers included Stan Faasua,
Jose Garcia, Aminadab Guerrero Penaloza,
Joshua Nye and Magen Shaw.
After a tree planting demonstration
kicked-off the event, volunteers split into
groups of three to five people to plant the
trees. Pre-dug holes, with fertilizer and organic
mulch provided, awaited throughout the park.
"We planted 15 to 20 trees total," Greene
explains. Volunteers watered and fertilized each
tree after planting it, as well as helped plant
milkweed to help guide the monarch butterfly's
migration path southward.
The Arbor Day event supported Carlsbad's
retention of Tree City USA delegation for
the 11th consecutive year; the National Arbor
Day Foundation approves the designation and
acknowledges the city's ongoing commitment
to tree care and urban forest sustainability.
