July/August 2015 | 23 Defining the Journey He so far has at least six managers and sales arborists reporting to him who have also attained the CTSP credential. "The Tree Care Industry Association-Certified Treecare Safety Professional (TCIA-CTSP) program is a strong complimentary program to Davey's safety and training programs. Participation gave me insight within our industry, but outside of our company that was very beneficial. I am encouraging participation and attainment of this credential within my management group so that others can gain this 'out-of-company' educational experience and perspective to assist in driving our programs back to the local R/C offices. I believe that is helping to drive our training and awareness, which is making a difference in our safety performance." Chris Klimas operations manager, Mid- Atlantic region He taught his two children to slow down and give respect to workers when entering work zones on the road, as well as to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the landscape at home, too. "Overall, everything comes down to attitude. Make habits of following safe practices at work and at home; you must be vigilant at all times. There could be risks anywhere you look, so you have to maintain the attitude of looking out for yourself and others. However, avoid becoming complacent because com- placency may catch up with you, creating bad habits and perhaps causing accidents to occur. There have been hundreds of incidents when working safely has resulted in particularly positive outcomes, but one thing sticks out to me: when we participate in storm cleanup work, particularly out of state, we travel together; we often experience an unfamiliar territory together. And, because storm work is often more risky than day-to-day trimming, the ride home is extra rewarding when everyone heads home safely." Larry Stress foreman on the FirstEnergy account He leads by example by working safe, whether he sets those examples by stepping out of Davey vehicles wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) every time, or by always fastening his seatbelt when he enters a vehicle, for work and while at home. "What stands out among Newberry Electric crew- members is that everyone watches out for each other. Everyone knows what to expect in terms of safety; everyone knows it's important at Davey. We implement many new safety techniques every few months; it's a big help with crewmembers because the review keeps them refreshed on several safety topics. And here, our crew has more than 2,400 incident-free days, which equals more than 10 years. Crewmembers hold a lot of pride in that and they have high regard for it." Chris Scott general foreman on the Newberry Electric account I n light of the 10th anniversary of Davey's Road to Zero program, as well as National Safety Month in June, we're calling on you to help us share ways our employees incorporate safe practices into their work and personal lives.
