20 | July/August 2015 Presenting Opportunities M ore than 1,000 people from the community attended the Sugar Bush Fair to celebrate Mother Nature's sweet gift of maple syrup—supplemented with a hearty pancake breakfast. Hay rides transported attendees through the woods to the breakfast tent at Merkle Cabin, where attendees enjoyed authentic demon- strations of how to make maple syrup, from extraction to production. Davey sponsored the two-day event for the first time this year. The event was located in Schaumburg, Illinois, and headed by Nick Broughton, sales arborist at Davey's Northwest Chicago R/C office. Broughton set-up a booth outside the breakfast tent in which he answered any and all tree or landscape inquiries. He distributed sunflower seeds, calendars and other Davey merchandise to get people excited about the growing season. "I talked to a lot of people interested in our company and who wanted advice," Broughton says. "The exposure was well worth it." Kids participated in a pioneer sugar camp, puppet show and other tree-related activities throughout the day. Homemade maple syrup and other goodies were available to purchase at the event as well. "It was such a nice day for the event," Broughton says. "It was a great time to spend in nature." This was Davey's first time working with Schaumburg Park District's Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary and won't be the last. Davey is scheduled to sponsor three other commu- nity events coming up this year, including the "Backyards for Nature," "Old Country Fair" and Spring Valley's annual Fall Harvest Festival. As Broughton says, "We are always looking for ways to get involved in the community." Approximately 850 students, 150 faculty and 300 green industry professionals attend- ed the event to network and share ways students may pursue careers in the field. "The Davey 'can-do' attitude and winning spirit made this happen," says Mark Noark, manager of recruiting and training. "A program like Student Career Days can only happen with your help and dedication." North Carolina State University hosted the 2015 event. In April, Project: LEARN of Medina County hosted its fifth annual Match Wits Trivia Night at Coppertop at Cherokee Hills Country Club in Valley City, Ohio. Proceeds benefited the nonprofit organization Project: LEARN, a free one-on-one tutoring program for adults 18 years old or older who need help with various courses and GED test preparation. A total of 23 teams of up to eight members each—a record high—signed up to compete for the title "Best Trivia Team in Medina County." Teams were able to bid on "topic gurus" throughout the competition to help them answer specific subject matter questions for each of the eight trivia categories. Carla Robinson, president of the Board of Education in Medina, Ohio, asked Davey's Golf North Operations Manager Ben Cavey to be a "golf guru" at the event. Cavey agreed, eager to help out and share his expertise. "Once you start getting involved in events, it snowballs," Casey says, adding, "which is fun; I've met a lot of people throughout my experiences." All proceeds supported Project: LEARN, a growing organization with more and more adults signing up each year to further their education.
