D ewson Street Public School teachers in Toronto, Ontario, are committed to bringing outdoor education to the classroom. How so? They created a "beyond the classroom" experience for students, with the goal of creating natural classrooms for students to learn outside and become more connected to nature. Teachers had the passion but little supplies to make the plan a reality. In need of tree stumps for the outdoor classrooms, teachers sent their local Davey office a request. Mike Gray, district manager for Davey Canada's Toronto West office, accepted the offer and agreed to help out. Davey has worked with the school in the past; Gray believes it's important to help out loyal customers. "It a good thing to do," Gray says. "I enjoy helping out, and the school really appreciated it." Gray, along with Foreman Steve Karas, Climber Taylor Nelson and Groundman Jahmel Williams, delivered 12 stumps to the school, in two trips. Dewson Street Public School teachers, parents and children were very appreciative of Davey's efforts—students are already playing on the stumps. One of the student's parents was so thankful for Davey's work, she sent a thank you note stating: "The stumps turned out to be a hit; teachers were thrilled and the kids loved them." Moving the Classroom Outdoors Community Collaboration Idea submitted by: Mark Logtenberg, district manager, Victoria office Victoria, British Columbia, St. Andrew's Regional High School officials, and community members were thrilled when Mark Logtenberg, district manager of Davey Canada's Great Victoria office, came to the rescue. For many years, a large laurel hedge hid the high school from sight— after many complaints school officials knew they had to do something. Logtenberg, along with Foreman Louis Burgess and Climber Rob Sellick, joined 15 parent volunteers to fix the problem. Davey brought a bucket truck, chipper and other tree and landscape equipment to complete the job—and that is exactly what they did. Thanks to the parents' help, Davey finished the work fairly quickly. 18 | July/August 2015 St. Andrews Regional High School sent Davey Canada's Victoria office a thank you card. Bookworms Unite Davey employees from the Kent, Ohio, corporate offices, shop and the Davey Institute built and stocked two large bookshelves with books for children aged birth to third grade for the United Way of Portage County Big Red Bookshelf Project. The project enlisted Portage County businesses and organizations to build and stock the shelves with new or gently used books, which will be placed at locations in the county served by United Way where fami- lies with young children visit. Davey employees donated 16 boxes of books to fill the two shelves, which were built by Conrad Straub and Anna and Randy Sabino.
