T
he Fairhaven High School Alumni
Association on the south coast of
Massachusetts was ecstatic when its majestic
70-year-old linden tree, standing on the high
school campus, received some much-needed
TLC from Davey's Cape Cod R/C office.
"The most rewarding part of the project
was seeing their faces when Davey agreed to
complete the project," says Steve Mercer, sales
arborist at the Cape Cod R/C office.
To celebrate Arbor Day this year, Mercer
and two crewmembers, including Foreman
Bernie Pinckney and Groundman Reis LeBeau,
agreed to perform tree care service on site.
"It's a beautiful campus, and it has gorgeous
buildings and one of the larger linden trees
our office has worked on," Mercer explains.
This large-scale linden tree could potentially
live to be more than 100 years old, shading the
community with countless benefits. But until
now, the tree had never received proper pruning
or maintenance.
Mercer and his crew were happy to help
give the tree the proper care it deserves. They
gave the tree a pruning makeover—thinning
out old broken branches and dead wood from
storm damage.
"I was very pleased, it was a nice opportunity
to be involved in this project," Mercer says.
Davey has collaborated with the school on
various projects before working on the linden
tree, including planting a large spruce tree and
replacing dead trees on the school grounds.
Mercer hopes to continue collaborating with
the school in the future.

A TREEmendous
Program
The Philadelphia Horticulture Society
(PHS) took action to create green cities
throughout the state—rallying the commu-
nity around the importance of tree care.
In order to create environmental
ambassadors throughout Philadelphia,
the PHS created Tree Tenders, a program
that offers tree care courses to the
community. Tree Tenders began in
1993 and has since trained thousands of
volunteers how to identify, plant and care
for neighborhood trees.
"The purpose of Tree Tenders is to
increase the tree canopy, community
involvement and number of street trees,
as well as to spread knowledge about trees
and the environment," says Chris Marshall,
assistant district manager at Davey's King
of Prussia R/C office, who recently joined
the Tree Tender program.
After hearing about the program,
Marshall knew he had to join. He took the
nine-hour course and is now considered a
Tree Tender member. He volunteers in his
town of Borough, Pennsylvania.
"I enjoy beautifying the Borough and
adding trees to the parks and streets in my
community," Marshall says.
