Rochester, Minnesota
Another "first" occurred in Rochester,
Minnesota last fall when the city hosted its
first Day of Service at the Soldiers Field
Veterans Memorial.
"The Minnesota Society of Arboriculture
asked me if I was interested in helping to
organize an event outside the Minneapolis
metropolitan area," says Jay Maier, district
manager of Maier Tree & Lawn, a Davey
company. Not only did Maier and his team
help coordinate the event and volunteer,
but also they're interested in helping again
at future events.
"Events like this help employees think of
the bigger picture and ways to give back,"
Maier says. "The company can also show
what it's doing for others in the community."
Maier Tree's Jhad Fetting, Eric Foley, Jim
Kelly, Jen Morgan, Don Mueller and Jarred
Robinson attended the event to help prune
hazardous limbs and deadwood from about
12 large ash trees.

Minneapolis, Minnesota
Fort Snelling National Cemetery's heavy
population of boulevard trees lends itself
to the tree maintenance it receives during
Minnesota Society of Arboriculture's annual
Day of Service.
Last fall was the first time Davey's South
Minneapolis R/C crew got involved with the
Day of Service on Veterans' Day; it was the
first time the event received a good volunteer
turnout in a while.
"It feels nice to give back to veterans on
Veterans' Day," says Ryan Gustafson, sales
arborist at Davey's South Minneapolis R/C office.
"Some Davey employees are veterans, too."
Gustafson, an executive board member for
the Minnesota Chapter of the International
Society of Arboriculture (ISA), wanted Davey
to get involved in the community and urban
forest of Minneapolis. Davey's Robert Raymond
and Pat Worden joined S&S Tree's Jon Schmidt
and Emily Mumford at the site to prune honey
locust trees and remove some ash trees.
