T he art of words has mingled with the beauty of nature at Wick Poetry Center's new home. Thanks to Davey's Cleveland East territory, the center boasts an impressive park, complete with several attractive natural elements for visitors and passersby to enjoy. Last year, Wick Poetry Center, located on Kent State University's campus in Kent, Ohio, moved to a renovated 112-year-old house the university relocated from its original location near campus. Wick Poetry Center's relocation not only provided more opportunities for the community to access and learn from its programs, but it also presented the space for an adjacent Poetry Park. Account Manager Kent Winterhalter coordinated Davey's donation to the park, including labor and plant materials such as trees, shrubs, perennials and sod. "Davey is a leader in the arboriculture and horticultural arena, and Kent State wanted that expertise to ensure the quality of their project," Winterhalter says. "The project was important because of the long-standing relationship between Kent State and Davey." Davey's Cleveland East territory crews also planted the trees on site. "The trees symbolize long-term plant life that renews our vital natural resources we use every day," Winterhalter explains. Several changeable display kiosks—the award-winning Traveling Stanzas TM —exist interspersed among the trees and other natural elements within Poetry Park. The interactive kiosks feature poetry from Wick Poetry Center authors, school children, Kent State students and the Northeast Ohio community. A "Seated Earth, 2014" sculpture, located in the center of Poetry Park, generates visual interest among park visitors. "We were honored to be chosen to do this project," Winterhalter says. "The crew was outstanding and the finished product was beautiful." Rhyme and Reason for Trees Poetry Park visitors mingle around the "Seated Earth, 2014" sculpture located in the center of the park. Davey donated the irrigation system installed inside the sculpture. Photo credit: Courtesy of Kent State University. 8 | January/February 2015
