W hen Davey Nursery crewmembers installed approximately 80 trees along the property edge of world-renowned Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, Pennsylvania, they installed much more than a privacy barrier to help reduce traffic noise. They installed trust. By demonstrating how to incorporate several Davey capabilities within two service lines into one project, Davey won over the client after a series of referrals and clear communication. CONNECTIVITY. Fazio Golf Design, a designer for golf courses in the area, initially referred Waynesborough Country Club to Davey's services. "We had completed projects with Fazio on other properties," explains Phil Snyder, East Atlantic operations vice president. "Davey has good connectivity with them." Although Davey had a previous relationship at Waynesborough, several managers discussed the opportunity to help them establish a better, natural road barrier before pursuing a proposal. Snyder first reached out to Waynesborough in May 2013. "The company works best when leads are personally delivered," he says. "We knew we had to take advantage of the opportunity." Once the client confirmed the scope of the project, Mark Svozil, vice president of Commercial Landscape Services, helped invest in the entire sales process, which involved the Davey Nursery in Wooster, Ohio, as well. After reviewing preliminary proposals and onsite meetings, Davey finalized the plan in spring 2014. COLLABORATION. Ben Kovacs, golf course superintendent of Waynesborough Country Club, helped finesse each tree's placement within the space available on the property, and Davey determined which trees to plant. "The trees we chose were selected because they do well in that area," says Rick Hanshaw, Davey Nursery manager. "They're all evergreen trees, which make good year-round barriers." Nearly the entire Davey Nursery crew was involved with transporting and planting the trees over the course of two weeks. The tree species primarily included Norway spruce, as well as American holly and cryptomeria. They ranged from 6 feet to 22 feet in height. Davey's King of Prussia R/C crew will be responsible for maintaining the trees for one year after installation. The program involves anti-desiccation treatments this winter, fertilization applications this spring and five inspections for managing diseases and pest issues. "The collaboration between different Davey service lines is important because it opens up opportunities for projects that may or may not be handled by different offices," Hanshaw says. Snyder adds, "Projects like these represent us delivering on the highlights of our strengths. This is where we're trying to go; cross-service line selling." CAPABILITY. So far, Davey's interdisciplinary teams have delivered thorough, impressive results to a high-end golf course business. "In such a critical market, doing a great job is important," Snyder says. "A well-delivered project like this is central to Davey's ongoing reputation and résumé building. Bringing in different service lines adds strengths to the project as a whole." Kovacs not only appreciated Davey accommodating a last-minute change he made to a plant variety, but also he was impressed with Davey's overall result. "The finished product looks great," he says, adding, "I am looking forward to it growing and screening the roadway in the future."
