In Training
C
ustomer service efficiency, commercial
leadership and safety department updates
were just some of the topics 17 Davey
employees from Commercial Landscape
Services (CLS) locations across the country
learned more about in August at the second
annual CLS Advanced Leadership Training.
The three-day training opportunity began
with an introduction from Dan Joy, executive
vice president and general manager of com-
mercial landscape services, which included
updates from the CLS service line. Following
the introduction, Melissa Habowski, from the
Summit County Educational Service Center,
presented commercial leadership opportunities.
Greg Myers, regional manager of the
Midwest region, and Mike Iatzko, production
manager at Detroit Southwest CLS branch,
lead a session on standard operating procedure
(SOP) efficiency, while Mike Binkley, manager
of technical development, led a mapping and
measuring session, which was new to this year's
CLS training. The third and final day started
with Shawn Fitzgerald, technical advisor at
the Davey Institute, and Shawn Skilton,
administrator of education and training,
who shared information about the Institute's
support and resources. The safety department
wrapped up the day with updates.

A Worldwide Legacy
Who knew Davey's legacy reached arborists worldwide? David James, an arborist
trainer from Thoughtplanters, traveled across the pond to learn about how Davey
trains its employees. James, also the ISA New Zealand Chapter representative, met
with Tim Brown, senior regional safety specialist, and Roy Montan, Great Lakes
regional safety specialist, to discuss the techniques, programs and methods of safety
training at the Davey Institute. James shared that visiting Davey had been on his
bucket list for years, and he had read about the legacy John Davey left to the profes-
sional field. Pictured from left to right: Roy Montan, David James and Tim Brown.
