Community Support
Trimming in the Great
Smoky Mountains
O
n May 4, volunteers from Davey's West
Chicago R/C office participated in the
annual Loyalty Day Parade in support of the
Batavia VFW in Batavia, Illinois.
"It was great to see so many people along
the parade route," explains West Chicago Sales
Arborist Steve Matravers. "This parade and
day help raise awareness for the company and
the Batavia community."
This year's parade theme was known as
"Kilroy Was Here" and was dedicated to the
veterans of World War II. Davey showed its
support to the veterans and Batavia community
with volunteers walking in the parade alongside
a bucket truck.
As Matravers says, "It's great to show
support to the community and Batavia VFW."
A Golden
Opportunity
D
avey knows champion trees. But
meeting an actual champion—more
specifically, a Canadian gold medalist from
the 2014 Sochi Olympics—doesn't happen
too often! Davey's Riley Gray (right),
foreman at the Victoria office, was watching
his father's golf tournament in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, when he spotted Kaitlyn Lawes,
who won the gold at this year's Winter
Olympics curling games. Lawes, a Winnipeg
native, is all smiles as she greets one of
Davey's own for a photo.
It's not every day Davey utility crews have the opportunity to trim trees in rights-of-way
upon the historic earth of national parks. But last winter, Wolf Tree's Sevier County
Electric Company account crewmembers shared that unique opportunity in the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park—America's most visited national park. Although they
were working hard, the Davey crewmembers enjoyed their time among the ancient
mountains, where a diverse presence of plant and animal life exists. Pictured, from

Stanley Breazeale and Jason Smola.
