T aking a trip to the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, Nevada, is like stepping back in history. At the front of the saloon is the original bar that was installed in 1913. In the corner is a table with bullet holes that were fired to stop someone from cheating in a poker game. The Pioneer Saloon is also where the legendary actor Clark Gable spent three days waiting for the fate of his wife, Carole Lombard. The saloon even has a stove dating back to 1910, to which Davey supplies the wood to heat the entire building. Matt Haro, district manager at Davey's Las Vegas R/C office, has been a longtime patron at the Pioneer Saloon and was looking for some way to get rid of unused logs and wood, without putting it to waste. Through conversations with the owners, Haro offered to donate unused wood supplies so that the saloon could continue to use its original stove for heat. "I am always looking for ways to get rid of my waste and help people save money at the same time," Haro says. "I get to help provide a lifeline in the winter." The Davey name was honored on a carved wall at the saloon's centennial celebration. Haro was lucky enough to be a part of a celebration that brought in national media attention, including the "History Channel" and "Ghost Hunters." The building has a great atmosphere with an old Wild West feeling, Haro describes. "This place is really fascinating," Haro explains. "I provide this wood to help it function as a place for gathering and a sense of community, as well as to preserve history." Back to the Wild, Wild West The carved plaque outside of the Pioneer Saloon honors Davey's contribution. W hen it comes to volunteering to better the community, there is nothing a team of Davey employees won't do to ensure a job is not only completed, but that it also exceeds expectations. Bonnie Swatt, senior administrative assistant of Forest City, a regional real estate association, reached out to the West Cleveland CLS team for a donation of time and supplies to help improve Cleveland's Saint Herman's House of Hospitality, a charity facility that provides several services to underprivileged residents of Ohio City. The charity was in dire need of landscape maintenance, and Davey was ready to help with a donation and application of 10 yards of mulch and 4 yards of topsoil. The team also donated tools, equipment and manpower to clean the front yard that was littered with debris and leaves, as well as the side yard and playground area located in the back of the building that was overgrown with weeds. The team went above and beyond Swatt's expectations. "It was through the leadership, Putting Positive Attitudes to Action hard work, planning and execution by the Davey team that this year's event was a success," she says. "We always talk about being a team and partnering, but your company takes it further and puts that attitude into action." The team also had two other tasks that day: donating some much-needed supplies to the Achievement Centers for Children in Cleveland and Camp Cheerful in Strongsville, Ohio. Dav- ey donated topsoil to the Achievement Center, as well as mulch and soil to Camp Cheerful. Volunteers work hard at the Saint Herman's House in Cleveland.
