The literature and information provided to A Garden Affair attendees A Garden Affair T he Indianapolis Museum of Art has not only historic, notable artwork inside its facilities, but it also boasts a 152-acre campus of luscious, sprawling gardens and grounds outside. The Horticultural Society of the Indianapolis Museum of Art holds a biennial fundraiser in honor of the beautiful campus grounds known as A Garden Affair. The fundraiser benefit is a night filled with a dinner reception, silent auction and a chance to network with fellow tree professionals and activists. This year, on June 7, Davey's Indianapolis R/C office participated in the fundraiser to help support the ongoing care for the grounds and gardens. Kevin McBride, Indianapolis R/C district manager, decided A Garden Affair would be an excellent chance to network with professionals in the trade, get the Davey name out in the area and, of course, support the IMA's gardens and grounds. McBride donated a gift certificate from Davey that included a tree evaluation and a choice of services, such as tree pruning, removal or shrub pruning, all provided by the Indianapolis R/C office. With the gift certificate and presence of the office, A Garden Affair wrapped up with another successful event that will help maintain and improve the IMA's extraordinary landscapes. Proceeds from the event are used for restoration and renovation, lightning protection installation and other various special projects. "It's definitely good to support the local community," McBride says. "This was a really cool event to be involved with." September/October 2014 | 15 S howcasing how important partnerships can be to arboriculture across every discipline was the theme of this year's Arboriculture on Parade, the 80th anniversary of the Western Chapter ISA (WCISA) annual Conference and Trade Show. It was a great opportunity for all Davey service lines to demonstrate that theme. Dana Karcher, market manager for Davey Resource Group's western region and WCISA president, planned Arboriculture on Parade, alongside a team of volunteers and co-chairs Nick Crawford, sales arborist at the San Francisco R/C office, and Jack McCabe, vice president of DRG utility operations. Karcher shared community tree success stories in a partnership with the California Urban Forests Council. Julia Bartens, DRG urban and community forestry specialist, delivered a presentation on urban forest assessment methods. Len Burkhart, technical advisor from the Davey Institute, led a workshop at the Huntington Gardens on pests and diseases. "The partnerships that Davey has with chapters, events and other industry organizations bring tremendous value to both sides," Crawford says. "For Davey, involvement in the Western Chapter has been historic," Karcher adds. "This conference allowed many team members to have a role in assuring its success." Attendees left with a better understanding of the growing field of arboriculture, various lessons about tree care and an understanding of the importance of external and internal partnerships to better strengthen the tree care community. 80 Years of Trees Leaders "Under One Canopy" T he MyDavey Bulletin congratulates Davey Resource Group's Jack McCabe and Dana Karcher, California Urban and Community Forestry Conference award recipients.
