In Training Leaders a-LOFT A spiring Davey leaders didn't hesitate to share their positive feedback after attending Davey Canada's very first Leaders of Tomorrow (LOFT). "We feel the course will continue to grow and improve with additional content and employee involvement year after year," says Regional Vice President John Arico, who led the LOFT training session with Safety Manager Pat Perry last year at the corporate office in Ancaster, Ontario. Managers designed the LOFT program to share a snapshot of company values with employees, discuss Davey's vision moving forward and provide leaders an opportunity to communicate their short- and long-term goals. "The Davey brand, commitments to future growth and stability and our continued industry and community involvement were just a few of the topics we discussed during the two-day workshop," Arico says. Peers and management appointed employees to attend the training based on their exemplary performances, commitments to safety and strong leadership qualities. Technical Advisor Darran Malcolm helped keep the class focused and engaged with course content. According to Arico, LOFT's goal was to provide key staff with the tools required to improve teamwork and productivity, build trust and employee relationships and motivate the company to grow. "We wanted to educate field employees on how the business operates," Arico says, adding attendees were exposed to concepts they don't see every day. Although ice storm damage and resulting tree care needs prevented Davey Canada managers from organizing another LOFT session early this year, the first session's success has encouraged the team to continue the program on a yearly basis. As Arico says, "This will help the company as a whole as we focus on continuing the building of our 'leaders of tomorrow.'"
