18 | March/April 2014 Thinking Green Across the Globe Davey's R.J. Laverne welcomed 23 Japanese students to the Davey Institute where they learned about urban forestry. O ne of Davey's own was fortunate to share his urban forestry knowledge with eager listeners from halfway around the world. When Japanese students arrived to the U.S. for more information on green cities, they explored the towns of three universities before ending their trip at Kent State University, located near Davey's corporate offices. We like to think they saved the best for last. To generate students' greater understanding of foreign cultures, Japan dispatches 2,300 Japanese students on two-week study tours to the U.S., and invites 2,300 American students on 10-day study tours of the Japanese terrain, through its Kakehashi Project. When Judy Wakabayashi, KSU professor of Japanese translation, discovered the 23 students visiting from Kitakyushu University were very interested in green cities, she called Davey. R.J. Laverne, Davey's manager of education and training, presented to the students at the Davey Institute on a Saturday last November. Professor Wakabayashi and the students were impressed by Laverne's presentation and grate- ful for the opportunity to visit Davey. Laverne adds, "I'm happy they thought enough of Davey to contact us; they were delightful." D avey arborists don't just talk about trees, they talk for trees. "We care about what we do," says Davey's Andy Stone. "We are tree care professionals." Davey's knowledge not only educates clients and their communities about tree care but also why homeowners and communities should try their best to keep trees around. Larry Dawkins, resident of the Breckenridge Homeowners Association of Durham, N.C., understands the importance of regular tree care and maintenance. As a client for nearly 10 years, he appreciates Davey's professionalism as crewmembers prune and fertilize his trees. According to Stone, sales arborist for Davey's Greensboro R/C office, Dawkins' opinion of the company just might have influenced Breckenridge to hire Davey for tree services at all its residential properties. From pruning, tree removals, cabling and Arbor Green PRO ® deep root fertilization, Davey will now provide several tree services for the association throughout the year. To better educate its members about Davey's tree services, Breckenridge representatives asked Stone to speak during an association meeting last fall. Stone covered several pruning tips, such as how to prune trees and which limbs to prune, as well as advice on whether to water new plants in fall and winter. He also explained why it's important to use professional companies with qualified certified arborists for tree care. "Attendees were very inquisitive," Stone says. "Everyone had questions, which allowed me to elaborate on other topics as well. It's all information they can pass on to friends and neighbors." Davey's sound tree care advice stems from the company's fully equipped staff and safety consciousness. As Stone says, "Because we genuinely care about trees, we teach other people to care for their trees, too." Andy Stone, sales arborist for Davey's Greensboro R/C office Talking For Trees
