M
ulch much?
Several Davey crews volunteer
to chip Christmas trees for "tree-cycling"
programs throughout the U.S. and Canada
every year. Local residents drop off their
"naked" real Christmas trees, and Davey crews
feed them through a chipper. The result? Loads
of fresh mulch ready for winter tree care and
spring planting projects.
You can see how Christmas trees spread
any remaining bits of holiday cheer—and its
natural, yet beautiful, décor—all year long.
But to what extent, exactly?
Tree-cycling by the Numbers
Fortis AB account
Apprentice Nathaniel Reece and Power Saw
Operator Peter Visztenvelt, Fortis AB account
crewmembers, provided equipment to help
chip more than 300 Christmas trees from Stony
plain residents. "Davey has been involved for
many years," Supervisor Rob Bernard says.
Atlanta office
For the largest tree-cycling program in the
U.S., Keep Georgia Beautiful's Bring One
for the Chipper, Davey crewmembers supply
equipment to chip local residents' Christmas
trees. "We chip mostly fir trees," District
Manager Chris Heim says, adding the Atlanta
R/C office has participated for more than 20
The Spread of Christmas Cheer
years. This year, Davey crewmembers chipped
more than 68,000 trees at 50 metro Atlanta
Home Depot locations.
Nanaimo office
This year, Davey crewmembers Shane Harris
and Nick Platz helped chip Christmas trees
to support the Nanaimo Search and Rescue.
Victoria office
Crewmembers from Davey's Victoria R/C
office chipped approximately 1,850 trees for
Chip In for the Kids, a tree-cycling program
that benefits the local Easter Seals program.
This year, the program collected $16,841 in
donations. Davey volunteers included Foreman
Andy Furneaux, District Manager Mark
Logtenberg, Foreman Graham Smith, Climber
Matt Thompson and Landscape Foreman
Bert "B.J." Veld.
