27 September/October 2026 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN SHANLEY MAKES VOLUNTEERING HER MISSION IN RETIREMENT Patti Shanley believes everyone has the time, talent or treasure to give back to their community, and she and her husband, Tom, have made that a focal point of their lives in retirement. One of the couple's current volunteering opportunities is at the Family Advocacy Center of Ottawa County, Ohio, where they help put together lunches for the center's meal program for students. The center provides thousands of meals every year during summer and school breaks. This summer alone, a total of 321,871 meals were distributed. Shanley said she loves getting to volunteer with youth there, and she hopes that more people will start to fi nd ways to support their neighbors. "It's so important to give back," Shanley said. "You never know when someone will need help. Along the way as a young family, so many people have helped us, and we want to be there for others, too. We may not always have treasure, but we always have time and talent to give. Volun- teering helps warm hearts." Shanley retired in 2022, following 41 years of service. She was administrative manager, R/C services, corporate offi ce. Shanley started with Davey in 1979 as a fi le clerk and moved to the residential billing services department in 1983. In 1986, she transferred to the client experience coordinator role in the Akron offi ce. After moving over to R/C administration in 1997, Shanley was promoted to administration assistant in 2003 and administrative manager in 2017. In 2006, Shanley was tapped to lead the CEC Council. She is a Best of Davey Leadership Award recipient. Shanley said she has still stayed connected with many of her former colleagues, and since moving from Kent, Ohio, to Marblehead, Ohio, along Lake Erie, she has gotten to catch up with plenty of former colleagues, which she enjoys. "You never know when you'll run into a Davey person up here," Shanley said. "At Davey, you become family with so many people because you share lots of milestones together – it helps create very meaningful friendships." Her move to Marblehead has also brought more adventures. She and Tom have discovered they are "freighter geeks," meaning they like to watch large ships sail into and out of ports along the Great Lakes, like the one they live by, and read up on which boats have an interesting history, where they travel to and which are the longest or oldest. This new passion has inspired two trips to Marine City, Michigan. Shanley and Tom also spend time on an additional volunteer- ing opportunity at the Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest functioning lighthouse on the Great Lakes, where she works in the gift shop and talks to visitors about the history of the lighthouse and its grounds. Through this experience, Shanley has been able to meet visitors from across the world. "As a kid, we came up here in the summer every year, so it's been awesome to live up here now and have so many of my childhood friends and family close by," Shanley said. "Who would've thought after all these years that Marblehead would become our retirement home? I'm feeling grateful."
