Native Shorelines
with Biochar
Native Shorelines, a Davey company,
applied for a patent on its new QuickReef®
Carbon+™ product, a development that
combines QuickReef® living shoreline
system with Davey-produced biochar.
The original QuickReef® living shoreline
system was developed by Native Shorelines
to help mitigate the negative effects the
ocean can have on shorelines such as wave
erosions and habitat destruction. Now, to
take this further, Native Shorelines has
created QuickReef® Carbon+™ to enhance
the living shoreline system by serving as a
long-term home for carbon with
preliminary research suggesting that the
added biochar will absorb contaminants
such as PFAS (man-made chemicals often
referred to as "forever chemicals"). While the
original system focuses primarily on
shoreline degradation, the new QuickReef®
Carbon+™ takes this a step further to help
improve water quality.
The Davey Institute will be conducting
further research in 2026 to determine
the effectiveness of this new product
more precisely.
Beautifying Green Spaces in Medina County
Davey worked with the Medina County Park District (MCPD) in Ohio to establish and beautify Rivendell
Nature Preserve and Shotwell Gardens in Medina County. Both of these projects were made possible by
generous donations of underdeveloped land. This work showcases our commitment to helping make
natural spaces available to all.
We also worked with MCPD
on the Allendale Park project
in 2024, which received the
first-place Award of Excellence
in the Capital Improvement
Projects from the Ohio Parks
and Recreation Association
in early 2025.
