THE DAVEY BULLETIN
Earlier this year, Cleveland Zoo staff toured the Davey
Nursery in Wooster, Ohio, in hopes they could use Davey
trees in their expansion of their Primate Forest rainforest
exhibit. While driving around the space with Rick Hanshaw,

After stopping by an older field of Bradford Pears, which
could no longer be sold due to the tree species being put

the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers, 582
trees were planted across five
locations in the Cleveland area last year.
For "Score for the Trees" with the
NHL Pittsburgh Penguins, 142 trees
were spread throughout three spots
around Pittsburgh. The "Swing for
the Trees" program with the MLB
Cleveland Guardians brought 185
trees to four Cleveland locations, and
with the "Birdies Fore Trees" through
The Kaulig Companies Championship,
which hosts the top PGA golfers 50
years old and older, a total of 172 trees
were planted between two areas in
Northeast Ohio.
Plantings are already planned for
2026, with 663 trees on the books for
the Cleveland Cavaliers partnership,
168 set for the Cleveland Guardians,
135 for the Pittsburgh Penguins and
108 for the "Triples for Trees" with the
Detroit Tigers.

"Any time something can be beneficial and put to good
use, that's a good thing," Hanshaw, branch manager,
Wooster Nursery, Commercial Landscape Services, said.
"Hopefully with the completion of the Primate Forest, and
as our older fields of trees reach the point of needing to
be cleared for future plantings, we may be able to once
again donate to the zoo."
