16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2025 PERSEVERANCE Through the Evergreens Veterans Green Careers Program, Davey is teaching the veteran community of New York City about the green industry and giving them skills that will help them find jobs in related fields. In a four-week course held at The Evergreens Cemetery, veterans attend virtual sessions with Davey Institute staff and spend time out in the 225-acre cemetery for hands-on work. Attendees learn about safety, tree and shrub identification, pest management and proper tree work, 'BIG APPLE' VETERANS GAIN JOB EXPERIENCE FROM DAVEY among other topics. After completing Davey's portion, they earn other certifications, like CPR and flagging, that will aid them in their career journey. During this past spring's class, the Davey Veterans group spoke with the class about working in the industry, and the company ran a recruitment session with resume building and interviewing tips. Since Davey's first class in 2023, 13 veterans have graduated from the program, and 10 more will finish the course by the end of this year. "Having grown up in a massive military area, I've been surrounded by those that are serving and those that have served most of my life; I've seen how difficult it can be for veterans to transition into civilian life, and I'm proud that I get the chance to give back, to provide an outlet for those that attend," Joshua Wilson, project manager, Evergreens Cemetery account, Commercial Landscape Services, said. "I love the community it creates with other veterans so they know they're not alone." Environmental Consulting, DRG, said. "This was a great project because our clients' vision was centered on the community. It's a great example of DRG thinking holistically about a project and creating a sense of community in an area. With our master planning, Davey made sure everyone's goals were met." DRG TAKES LEAD ON COMMUNITY-CENTERED PROJECT With the dedicated leadership of eight Davey Resource Group (DRG) Environmental Consulting employees, a new sense of community was added to Brunswick, Ohio, with the opening of a locally-sourced marketplace and residential community. Market 42, a 26,000-square-foot space featuring over 20 local food and retail vendors, opened in May with townhomes built right next door. DRG took on the project from its start, developing an engineered site plan and working with the city's planning commission to rezone the property to a special planning district. The Davey team led the process of surveying the space, designating spaces for protected wetlands and laying out the design for elements including streets, parking, storm water management compliance and a gazebo. "Market 42's opening was huge – every business sold out of what they had that day, and the cars filled up the entire parking lot," Tom Ludwig, senior landscape architect, MISSION Market 42, a space for over 20 local vendors in Brunswick, Ohio, holds a packed grand opening in May, with much of the project's completion thanks to Davey Resource Group's diligent work.
