13 November/December 2025 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN we have the most incidents, and they align closely with the Foresight tool model. As an organization we want to make sure that not only are we reducing the number of events that happen, but we also want to make sure that we're reducing the severity and nature of the events that happen. I think we all would agree that minor incidents such as insect bites and stings that may require some medications are tolerable to a certain degree. But what we don't want to see happening are people who have fallen 30 feet from a tree, or who were struck by a falling limb. These are the life-altering events that we want to reduce. So that's why we're driving this awareness and focus towards recognizing the potential severe hazards that are out there for our workers. Q. So using Foresight is really about awareness for potentially severe incidents and reminding you to factor that into your work plan to try and reduce or prevent severe incidents? A. Absolutely, yes. Q. Are some crews already using Foresight? A. Foresight is currently being rolled out across some operations in Eastern Utility services. We're also going to integrate Foresight more broadly across Davey Health and Safety programs such as Learn Safe Daily. And we're developing a course on the Davey Learning Management System, which will make Foresight available to all employees in 2026. We're also using Foresight in some discussions with our clients, and that includes clients beyond Utility services. We are engaging with some of our Commercial Landscape Services and Davey Resource Group clients about Foresight and how it can help our crews on their properties work safely. Q. What are some other benefits of Foresight? A. The obvious answer is that it helps create a safer work environment and helps send employees home safely at the end of every day. But it also helps create a more engaging, collaborative relationship not just between Health and Safety employees and Davey operations teams, but also between managers and their team members. It helps invite conversation and sharing around incidents and close calls, so that we can learn from past incidents, potential incidents, and help prevent future incidents. Foresight is a tool that can help our employees better complete their job planning process. It's like any other tool. A chainsaw will still cut even if it's dull. But if you sharpen that chainsaw, it's going to cut better, it's going to work more efficiently, and it's going to perform the way it's truly designed to. Foresight helps sharpen your skills and provide you with better insight to do your job safely. Davey's use of the Foresight tool combines the energy wheel, a commonly used safety tool in the utility industry, with the six critical Serious Incident and Fatality (SIFs) hazards at Davey, and the steps Davey uses to evaluate exposure all into one, clear approach that guides safer decisions in the field when it comes to reviewing job plans and determining what additional hazards may be present on the work site. Additional information on the Foresight Tool's application will be shared as the tool is implemented across Davey operations.
