THE DAVEY BULLETIN
Working alongside greehill, an urban forest management
company, Davey Resource Group (DRG) is making industry
history in the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and
Plymouth, Minnesota, with smart tree inventories. For the
inventories, ground-based LiDAR scans capture biometrics
of all trees in a city's jurisdiction. That data is then analyzed
by greehill's artificial intelligence model to extract tree
species and structural, canopy and environmental attributes.
An updated inventory is sent in TreeKeeper
®
, Davey's urban
forestry management software, and is paired with greehill's
digital twin presentation, which displays the measurements
of every tree along with a manipulable 3D image. All trees
of the same species and size category are put in a cohort,
and any outliers that fall outside normal parameters of that
group are flagged by the AI software for arborists to make
inspections remotely and in the field.
"The result is an informed resource analysis that includes
comparative canopy and structural data, paired with an urban

forest management plan that improves the urban forester's
confidence in pruning the right tree, in the right place, at
the right time," Nathan Davila, senior associate consultant,
Environmental Consulting, DRG, said.
The Las Vegas and North Las Vegas smart tree inventories
became part of urban forest master planning projects led by
DRG. Las Vegas was the first U.S. city to adopt smart tree
inventory as part of an urban forest plan, Davila said.
This year, the city of Plymouth, Minnesota, became the
first city in its state to conduct a smart tree inventory in
partnership with DRG and greehill.
"This project shows that Davey leadership is committed
to applying our experience to new, emerging industry
technology," Jacob McMains, area manager, Environmental
Consulting, DRG, said. "On top of that, I firmly believe that
the power of this data will be what drives future decision
making for arboriculture and community forestry professionals."

Q: What is the key to providing excellent service to clients?
A: Communication before being prompted is extremely
important. See something, say something, do something.
Customers want to be taken care of before they have to bring
it to your attention.
